South Carolina heads to Norman this weekend with a chance to keep the momentum rolling after its win over Tennessee, but the Gamecocks are walking into a tough road test against Oklahoma.
Shane Beamer’s team meets Brent Venables and the Sooners on Saturday at 4:15 p.m. The SEC matchup will air on SEC Network, with South Carolina trying to build on a 4-3 record and a 2-3 mark in conference play. Oklahoma, meanwhile, comes in off a road win at Mississippi State.
These teams haven’t met much over the years. South Carolina and Oklahoma have played only twice in the all-time series, with the Gamecocks winning on the road in 2024 and the Sooners returning the favor last year in Columbia.
Oddsmakers still like Oklahoma at home, even with South Carolina coming off back-to-back ranked upsets. The Sooners opened as a 5.5-point favorite, according to the VegasInsider consensus, and that line has shifted to 4.5 points at major sportsbooks such as FanDuel and DraftKings.
South Carolina is 3-4 against the spread this season. ESPN Analytics gives the Gamecocks a 36.1% chance to win.
The injury picture is worth watching, too. South Carolina had seven players on the official SEC injury report released Wednesday night.
WR Jayden Sellers, edge rusher Kobby Sakyi-Prah, OL Josian Thompson, OL Dayne Arnett and OL Seth Smith are all listed as out. Sellers and Thompson are both out for the year.
DB Quay’sheed Scott and RB Jawarn Howell are both listed as doubtful. Scott has missed the last two games, while Howell was out last week against Tennessee.
The SEC report will be updated Thursday, Friday and again 90 minutes before kickoff Saturday.
The weather in Norman could also play a role. Accuweather’s 10-day forecast calls for temperatures that won’t get above 64 degrees and will fall into the mid-50s, along with thick cloud cover and some rain. There’s a 55% chance of rain all day Saturday in the Norman area.
South Carolina has a few clear themes carrying into this one. A victory would give the Gamecocks three straight wins.
They haven’t won three consecutive SEC games since finishing the 2024 season with four straight conference victories, and that six-game streak to close last year was also the last time they won three games in a row. A win Saturday would also bring their SEC record back to .500.
The run game is another major storyline. South Carolina still owns the No. 1 rushing offense in the SEC at 218 yards per game, but the last few weeks have made one thing obvious: too much of the burden has fallen on LaNorris Sellers.
In the last three games, Sellers has accounted for 313 of the Gamecocks’ 480 rushing yards. That’s a lot of production from one quarterback, but South Carolina needs more from its backs if it wants that part of the offense to hold up over the stretch run.
There’s also the possibility of national attention creeping back in. After beating Tennessee, South Carolina picked up votes in both the Associated Press Top 25 and USA Today Coaches Poll.
The Gamecocks received 12 votes from the coaches and eight from the media. A win over Oklahoma could be enough to push USC into the rankings for the first time since September 2025.
A few players stand out on both sides. South Carolina kicker Malik Orsan delivered the biggest kick of the season last week, burying a 48-yard field goal as time expired in the 27-24 win over then-No.
11 Tennessee. The Southeast Missouri State transfer wasn’t the favorite in the offseason kicking battle, but he’s rewarded the staff’s faith by going 10 for 12 on field goals and 22 for 22 on extra points.
Offensive lineman Nolan Hay also enters the game with a spotlight on him after being named the Outland Trophy National Player of the Week on Tuesday by the Football Writers Association of America. Hay has been one of South Carolina’s most reliable linemen this season, usually starting at guard while also taking snaps at center during Carter Miller’s injury absence. His Pro Football Focus blocking grade is among the best on the roster.
Oklahoma’s John Mateer brings the opposite kind of profile: big arm, playmaking ability with his legs, and a season that has included too many giveaways. He has thrown for 1,591 yards and 11 touchdowns, but also seven interceptions.
Isaiah Sategna III has been his top target. The fifth-year student was an All-SEC selection last year after posting 965 receiving yards, and he leads Oklahoma this season with 41 catches for 578 yards.

Oklahoma Is Bracing For South Carolina At Full Strength
South Carolina heads to Norman on Saturday afternoon for just the second meeting in program history, and the Gamecocks arrive with some momentum after beating Tennessee last week. Oklahoma is coming off a win at Mississippi State, but Brent Venables and offensive coordinator Ben Arbuckle made it clear this is the kind of matchup that gets their attention, especially with South Carolina showing it can stress opponents on both sides of the ball.
The Sooners are preparing for a complete challenge, from the Gamecocks offense to a defense that has been tough to sort out. With playmakers on both sides of the line of scrimmage, South Carolina gives Oklahoma a chance to find out how it handles a physical SEC opponent that has plenty working in its favor right now. South Carolinas Defensive Turnaround Against Tennessee Was About More Than Halftime Speech
South Carolinas defense looked like a different unit after halftime against Tennessee, and the turnaround had plenty to do with the details that often decide close SEC games. Defensive tackle Kelby Collins and lineman Noah Clark pointed to the groups focus and effort as the difference, while Shane Beamer said the staff also leaned into a few tactical changes that helped settle things down.
The Gamecocks tightened up with more five-man pressure looks and more man coverage, and the results showed up quickly as Tennessee managed just three points after the break. It was the kind of second-half correction that can get lost in the larger story of a game, but for South Carolina it served as a reminder that the fix was about execution as much as any sideline message. South Carolina Faces A Prove-It Road Test As McElroy Weighs In
South Carolina heads into Week 9 with a chance to show its recent momentum is more than a short burst, and Greg McElroy sees the matchup at Oklahoma as a tight one between two unranked teams coming off wins. His game preview points to a contest where the margin should be slim and the scoring should stay modest, which fits the kind of road test that can tell you a lot about where a team really stands in the middle of a season.
The broader market around the game appears to be treating it much the same way, with opinions leaning toward a close finish rather than a clear separation. For the Gamecocks, that makes this trip about more than just a result on paper. It is the sort of game that can either reinforce a rising feel or leave a team still searching for proof it belongs in the conversation. [Read more 🡒]
