South Carolina's spring practice is in full swing, and Wednesday offered another glimpse into the action for reporters. The buzz around the Gamecocks' offensive line continues, especially after a viral clip of their drills sparked widespread debate.
Offensive line coach Randy Clements found himself in the spotlight, but he didn't shy away from the criticism. Instead, he showcased a comparison video, illustrating the drill's effectiveness with footage from his Baylor days.
Clements, a seasoned coach with a knack for developing talent, reminded everyone that drills should translate to real-time performance. Offensive coordinator Kendal Briles, who shares a long history with Clements, backed him up, dismissing online critics and praising Clements as the best O-line coach he's encountered.
During Wednesday's session, Clements and assistant coach Jason Smith, a former top NFL draft pick, were focused on refining the linemen's agility and balance. Smith took a hands-on approach, simulating defensive moves to challenge the players' ability to adjust their weight and maintain low stances. Meanwhile, Clements kept a watchful eye, ensuring proper form and technique.
Clements is part of a fresh wave of coaches joining Shane Beamer's staff for the 2026 season, bringing new energy and strategies to the team.
On the defensive side, coordinator Clayton White noted that edge rusher Dylan Stewart is still not fully participating. Observations confirmed Stewart was in street clothes, sitting out the drills for now.
As for the quarterbacks, during the throwing drills, Briles was actively observing LaNorris Sellers and his fellow QBs. The drill involved throwing slants to receivers who were immediately met by coaches wielding pads, testing their readiness and resilience upon catching the ball.
With these practices, the Gamecocks are clearly setting the stage for an intriguing season ahead.
