South Carolina's linebacker, Justin Okoronkwo, is ready to elevate his game as he heads into his sophomore season with the Gamecocks. After a promising 2025 season, Okoronkwo is not only focused on his own development but is also excited to welcome a new international teammate to the squad.
Standing tall at 6-foot-3 and weighing in at 231 pounds, Okoronkwo made his presence felt in his debut season, playing all 12 games and starting in eight. With 64 tackles, including four for a loss, he proved to be a key player on the field.
This year, Okoronkwo will be joined by Irish offensive lineman Neff Giwa, another recruit from the PPI organization. Okoronkwo played a role in recruiting Giwa and is eager to support him as he transitions to college football.
Reflecting on their meeting, Okoronkwo shared, "I met him during his visit a couple of weeks ago. He's new to the game, just like I was.
It's exciting to have another international player on the team. I'll be there for him, helping him adjust just like I did."
The Gamecocks' linebacker corps is looking strong with Okoronkwo, Shawn Murphy-who transferred from Florida State-and Fred Johnson. Okoronkwo feels that with a year under their belts, they're ready to take their performance to the next level in 2026.
"Last year was about learning the ropes and getting comfortable," Okoronkwo noted. "Now, with Shawn, Fred, and the younger guys, we're more in sync. We know the playbook, and we're ready to play with more confidence."
Reflecting on his growth, Okoronkwo added, "I’m more confident and better at communicating with my teammates. That’s going to elevate my game this season."
Recently, Okoronkwo and the defense faced off against the Gamecocks' offense in their first spring scrimmage. The experience was intense and fast-paced, thanks to a new offensive coordinator.
"The pace was something else," Okoronkwo remarked. "It’s challenging, but it’s preparing us for the season.
The faster drives mean we need top-notch conditioning. It’s tough, but it’s making us better."
With a solid foundation and a supportive team environment, Okoronkwo is poised for a standout season, ready to make an impact both on and off the field.
