After just three practices with LaNorris Sellers, Kendal Briles is starting to get a feel for what the future might hold. As the new offensive coordinator, Briles is already making some strategic decisions about how to best utilize Sellers’ talents.
While at TCU, Briles was known for a pass-heavy offense, with the Horned Frogs frequently throwing the ball around 35 times a game. This approach helped Hoover rank among the top in the nation for passing yards over the past two seasons. However, it seems that South Carolina might be taking a different approach.
"We had a system that worked for Josh, focusing heavily on the passing game," Briles shared. "But with LaNorris, we’re looking at a more balanced attack. His durability allows us to incorporate more running plays, using his legs as a weapon."
Sellers’ performance dipped last season, but Briles, brought in by head coach Shane Beamer, is optimistic about revitalizing the quarterback’s game. Even though it’s early in the spring practice schedule, Briles is encouraged by what he’s seen.
"We’ve got a long road ahead, but I’m pleased with the progress," Briles noted. "LaNorris and the other quarterbacks have looked sharp."
Briles is particularly impressed with Sellers’ mental game. "He’s sharp and dedicated," Briles said. "It’s clear he cares deeply and puts in the work."
One area of focus is refining Sellers’ footwork and timing with running backs, especially in play-action scenarios. Briles emphasizes the importance of allowing Sellers’ natural athleticism to shine without overthinking.
"I want him to play naturally, leveraging his talent," Briles explained. "He’s very coachable and quick to apply feedback, which is promising."
Freshman Landon Duckworth is also catching Briles’ eye. With a skillset similar to Sellers, Duckworth is showing promise early in his college career.
"He’s talented and eager to learn," Briles said. "Though he’s with the third group now, he’s making the most of his reps and showing significant growth."
As spring practice continues, the focus remains on development and fine-tuning, setting the stage for a potentially exciting season ahead.
