Kentucky Faces An Early SEC Test That Could Reshape Its Ranking Push

South Carolina aims to turn its fortunes around against a tough Kentucky squad as critical weaknesses and key matchups take center stage in this SEC clash.

South Carolina’s season is at a crossroads, and Saturday’s visit from No. 24 Kentucky feels like a game the Gamecocks can’t afford to let slip away.

The pressure lands squarely on LaNorris Sellers. South Carolina has opened SEC play with two straight losses, and now it’s staring at the real possibility of dropping below .500.

That would be a brutal turn for a team already navigating the second of four consecutive games against ranked opponents. For Sellers, the stakes are personal, too.

The projected first-round pick in the 2027 NFL Draft has not looked like himself in conference play, throwing three interceptions and three touchdowns while completing 43 of 70 passes.

Through four weeks, Sellers has completed 62.1 percent of his throws for 833 yards, six touchdowns and four interceptions. He’s also been a real factor as a runner, carrying 36 times for 244 yards and a score.

But against SEC defenses, the margin for error has shrunk fast. South Carolina lost by seven to Mississippi State in Week 3, then got blasted 31 points by Keelon Russell and Alabama in Week 4.

Kentucky brings a defense that can make life miserable. The Wildcats rank ninth in the country in net adjusted EPA/Play on that side of the ball, and they’ve also been strong on passing downs, sitting 22nd in EPA/Pass and 16th in early downs EPA/Play. That could force Sellers into a lot of tough third-down throws, especially with South Carolina ranking 99th nationally in average third-down distance.

The oddsmakers have made South Carolina a 2.5-point favorite at home, and that number says plenty about how this matchup is being viewed. The Gamecocks have covered the spread only once in four games this season, but the case for them here is rooted in Kentucky’s offense, which has been far less convincing than its ranking suggests.

The Wildcats are 126th in net adjusted offensive EPA/Play, 90th in EPA/Pass and 114th in EPA/Rush. They’re also 135th in third- and fourth-down success rate.

That’s not the profile of a team built to consistently capitalize on mistakes, even after the big Week 3 upset of then-No. 9 Texas A&M.

Kentucky followed that up with an easy win over South Alabama in Week 4 to get back into the top 25, but the offense still hasn’t flashed enough to inspire much confidence on the road.

South Carolina’s defense has been solid but not elite, ranking 79th in net adjusted EPA/Play, so Kentucky should have some openings. Still, the Gamecocks’ offense has been the better unit overall. South Carolina is 18th nationally in net adjusted EPA/Play and 23rd in success rate, and Kentucky’s defense will have to deal with that after allowing just 17 points against Alabama.

This is the kind of game that can swing a season in a hurry. A loss would basically slam the door on South Carolina’s College Football Playoff hopes before the Gamecocks move on to Florida and Tennessee. With that in mind, the better side is South Carolina laying the points at home.

Dylan Stewart Now Faces A Bigger South Carolina Question

Dylan Stewarts absence has become one of the more delicate storylines around South Carolina as Shane Beamer tries to balance accountability with the bigger picture for a young player the Gamecocks clearly need. Beamer said Stewart is suspended and not with the team, a status that leaves the program sorting through both the fallout from an in-game punch and the standards Beamer has made central to his approach.

The SEC later confirmed the contact as egregious, adding another layer to a situation that is no longer just about one moment on the field. For South Carolina, the question now is not only when Stewart returns, but whether he can earn back the trust and meet the programs expectations before Beamer decides his future involvement. Gamecocks Had Several NFL Performances Fans Will Want To See

Former South Carolina standouts kept showing up across the NFL in Week 3, giving Gamecocks fans plenty to track on Sunday. For a program that has long sold itself on sending talent to the next level, these weekly NFL snapshots are part of the fun. They also offer a reminder that South Carolinas reach is spread across the league in a lot of different roles, with former Gamecocks making their presence felt in games that mattered for their new teams. Kentuckys Surge Gets A Real Test In Columbia

Kentucky is back in the Associated Press Top 25 for the first time since October 2023, and the timing gives Saturdays SEC trip to Columbia a little extra weight. The Wildcats have strung together two straight wins behind efficient quarterback play and a ground game that has looked more dependable lately, which is a different kind of challenge for a South Carolina team trying to steady itself in conference play.

South Carolina enters the matchup trying to snap a seven-game SEC losing streak, and the Gamecocks will have to do it without defensive end Dylan Stewart, who is serving a one-game suspension after egregious contact in a recent game. Kentucky has earned the right to be taken seriously again, but this is also the kind of road test that can tell you whether the surge is real or just a short-lived lift. [Read more 🡒]
