Gamecocks Target Texas Quarterback as 2027 Recruiting Push Heats Up

South Carolina is casting a wide net at quarterback under Kendal Briles, with a flurry of new offers reshaping the 2027 recruiting landscape.

South Carolina offensive coordinator Kendal Briles is wasting no time making his presence felt on the recruiting trail - especially in a state he knows well. Since stepping into his new role last month, Briles has been actively targeting quarterbacks, and his latest offer goes to a rising name out of the Lone Star State.

Ty Knutson, a three-star signal-caller from Smithson Valley High School in Spring Branch, Texas, is the latest quarterback to receive an offer from the Gamecocks. Knutson, ranked No. 53 nationally among quarterbacks in the 2027 class by 247Sports, is starting to see his recruitment heat up.

He picked up an offer from Texas over the weekend, and now South Carolina is joining the mix. TCU, where Briles was previously on staff, extended Knutson an offer back in June.

Briles’ familiarity with Texas recruiting circles is clearly paying off. Since arriving in Columbia, he’s been aggressive in offering young quarterbacks with upside.

Just this week, he extended an offer to Jerry Meyer III, a 2027 TCU commit out of Waxahachie, Texas. The day before, South Carolina offered Weston Nielsen, a 2027 Arizona State commit from Bastrop, Texas.

And it’s not just 2027 quarterbacks on Briles’ radar. On Wednesday, the Gamecocks also offered Kaden Craft, a four-star prospect from the 2028 class out of Mooresville, North Carolina - signaling that Briles is thinking long-term and casting a wide net.

Meanwhile, South Carolina is keeping tabs on quarterbacks already familiar with the program. Jayce Johnson, a Texas A&M commit who had the Gamecocks among his finalists before committing in August, announced he was re-offered earlier in the day.

It’s clear Briles is looking to build his quarterback room with a mix of high-upside talent and strategic ties to key recruiting territories. With deep roots in Texas and a sharp eye for quarterback development, he’s already shaping South Carolina’s future under center - and doing it with urgency.
