Franklin Richardson, the dynamic quarterback from Sumter, is turning heads with his dual-threat capabilities. Known for his power-packed running game when he takes off from the shotgun, Richardson is catching the eyes of college scouts, not just as a quarterback, but as a potential running back.
Recently, the University of South Carolina extended an offer to Richardson during a visit where he observed the team’s practice. The offer was specifically for the running back position, highlighting his versatility and athleticism.
Reflecting on his visit, Richardson shared, “I got to see their practice, tour the academic and athletic facilities, and then had a sit-down with the coach who offered me a scholarship after meeting with my family.”
At Sumter, Richardson’s former coach, Mark Barnes, recognized his athletic prowess, utilizing him effectively at quarterback. Meanwhile, USC’s running backs coach, Stan Drayton, sees his experience as a quarterback as a significant advantage for his transition to running back. Richardson’s impressive stats back up this potential shift-he rushed for 1,424 yards and 31 touchdowns last season, while also passing for 651 yards and four touchdowns.
With a coaching change at Sumter bringing in Drew Marlowe, formerly of South Florence and known for coaching USC quarterback LaNorris Sellers, Richardson is poised for further development.
Richardson is no stranger to the running back role, having played it before. “Coach Drayton appreciates that I study the game and believes my quarterback experience will help me read defenses as a running back. I’m a quick learner and adapt fast,” he noted.
Having attended a USC camp last summer, Richardson was particularly impressed by the practice intensity and Coach Drayton’s hands-on approach. “The energy was high, especially during the scrimmage. Coach Drayton’s involvement in drills is something I really value.”
As for where South Carolina stands in his recruitment journey, Richardson mentioned, “They’re definitely high up on my list.”
Besides USC, Richardson has offers from Duke, East Carolina, and Coastal Carolina. He’s already visited Duke and ECU, with official visits lined up for June. Despite the growing interest, Duke is currently catching his attention, but he plans to revisit both USC and Duke this spring.
