South Carolina’s first public test of the season arrives Thursday night in Rock Hill, where the Gamecocks will face Wake Forest in “The Scout Exhibition” at 6 p.m. inside the Rock Hill Sports & Event Center.
It’s the first official exhibition for South Carolina, and the roster taking the floor looks nothing like last season’s group. The Gamecocks bring back just three letterwinners in Hayden Assemian, Grant Polk and Eli Sparkman, with Polk returning as the team’s leading scorer from a year ago at 3.8 points per game.
Around them is a rebuilt cast of 12 newcomers, including seven collegiate transfers, two veteran international additions and three freshmen. The transfer group features Aleksas Bielauskas from Wisconsin, Shane Blakeney from Drexel, Camden Heide from Texas, Kory Mincy from George Mason and Jakub Nečas from Duquesne. Heide and Nečas both arrive with NCAA Tournament experience, and Heide was part of Purdue’s 2024 NCAA Championship run.
South Carolina also added a pair of players from overseas in Juan Fernández and Hugo López. Both spent last season in Spain. Fernández played the last two seasons for Bàsquet Girona in Liga ACB, the top league in Spain, while López spent the year with Movistar Estudiantes in Primera FEB, Spain’s second division.
The freshmen class includes Mathias Alessanco of Joinville, Brazil; Marcus Johnson of Cleveland, Ohio; and Ford Wilder of Sumter, S.C. Johnson, the cousin of former Gamecock Meechie Johnson, comes in as a consensus four-star recruit according to 247Sports, on3 and ESPN.
He was ranked No. 6 nationally among point guards and No. 3 in Ohio, won Ohio Mr. Basketball in back-to-back seasons and had his jersey retired at Garfield Heights.
Wake Forest is also leaning on a remade roster. The Demon Deacons return Isaac Carr, who played in 26 games last season, but they’ve added MAAC Player of the Year and Rookie of the Year Kevair Kennedy from Merrimack, along with Jamari McDowell from Kansas and Justin Ray from Monmouth. Their freshman class is headlined by twins Gallagher and Gavin Placide, both top-100 recruits.
The Demon Deacons already have one exhibition in the books, a 94-77 loss to Georgetown. Kennedy scored 19 points in that game, while Gavin Placide added 14 and Gallagher finished with 13 points and a team-high six rebounds.
Derek Scott and Casey Manning will have the radio call. The game will air live locally on 107.5 The Game and across all in-state affiliates that carry Gamecock men’s basketball.
It will also stream on Spiideo for a nominal fee, with live stats available through StatBroadcast. Tickets remain on sale for the matchup.

Former Clemson Rival Is Giving South Carolina Fans Plenty To Celebrate
Through six games, Kendal Briles has helped give South Carolina something it has not always had in recent seasons: an offense that looks faster, more confident and far more productive. The Gamecocks have climbed into strong national territory in rushing and total offense, and the payoff showed up again in the recent win over Florida, where the group moved with a steadiness that had been missing far too often.
Even at 3-3, there is a noticeable difference in the way South Carolina carries itself on that side of the ball, and Shane Beamer has made it clear he values the lift Briles has brought. The former Clemson rival has been a fitting fit so far, giving the Gamecocks reason to believe the progress is real while leaving the bigger question of how high this offense can still rise. South Carolina Just Reopened A Bowl Path That Gets Real Fast
A much-needed win over No. 16 Florida has quietly put South Carolina back in the bowl conversation. The Gamecocks are 3-3 overall and 1-3 in SEC play, and the victory gave them a little breathing room after a rocky start to the conference schedule. ESPN Analytics now has them favored in three of their final six games, which is the kind of runway that can change the feel of a season in a hurry.
For a program trying to get back to the postseason for the first time in two years, the path is suddenly clear enough to matter. Bowl projections have already started to point toward the Gasparilla Bowl if South Carolina keeps stacking wins, and there is even a chance for something a little better if it can get past Tennessee next week. For now, the Florida win did more than improve the record - it reopened a path that looked much narrower just a week ago. [Read more 🡒]
Shane Beamer Just Landed In An SEC Debate Gamecocks Fans Will Feel
A Florida-based data scientist dug through Reddit conversations across 16 SEC football subreddits and put some numbers behind what fans have been arguing about for months. Using natural language processing to measure sentiment in those online discussions, the analysis identified the most negatively mentioned figures in the league community, with LSU coach Lane Kiffin at the top of the list and Oklahoma quarterback John Mateer next in line.
For South Carolina fans, the part worth watching is Shane Beamers inclusion among the coaches drawing the most negative chatter. Beamer has become one of the leagues more visible personalities, which naturally brings extra attention when SEC debates turn sharp, and this data-driven snapshot suggests Gamecocks followers are not the only ones paying close attention to how he is viewed around the conference.
