Florida’s loss to South Carolina landed hard, but Sunday brought at least one jolt of good news for Jon Sumrall and his staff.
The Gators took a bruising 38-19 defeat to the reeling Gamecocks in Week 6, a result that dropped Florida to 4-2 overall, 2-2 in SEC play and out of the rankings. That came after a stretch that had already included a loss to Missouri, even though Florida had opened the season 4-0 with a win over No.
4 Ole Miss. In other words, this was the kind of game Florida was expected to handle.
Instead, it slipped away.
Then came the recruiting flip that softened the blow. Five-star wide receiver Easton Royal, long committed to Texas, switched his pledge to Florida on Sunday. It’s the kind of move that doesn’t erase a loss, but it absolutely changes the mood around a program for a moment.
Royal brings serious star power with him, too. The 247Sports Composite lists him as the No. 1 wide receiver in the class of 2027, making this one of the biggest recruiting wins Florida could land at this stage.
There had been scheduled visits to LSU and Texas on Royal’s calendar, but those are now being removed, and ESPN’s Eli Lederman reported that the five-star is expected to shut his recruitment down.
For whatever that phrase means in 2026, the message is clear enough: Royal is bought in on Sumrall and Florida.
"I know [Sumrall] is a winner," he told ESPN over the summer. "He won at Tulane and took them to the College Football Playoff.
I know what he's all about. He's the type of coach I want to play for."
It’s a major add for Florida, and a welcome lift after a rough weekend. Still, the benefit only goes so far if the Gators can’t bounce back on the field.
And the schedule doesn’t offer much time to exhale: the No. 7 Longhorns are next.

Dylan Stewarts South Carolina Return Means More Than Just Playing Again
Dylan Stewarts return to the South Carolina football team came with more weight than a normal reinstatement. After an indefinite suspension from Shane Beamer for prior on-field conduct, Stewart had to work his way back by apologizing, cleaning up his behavior and showing growth away from the field as well, including strong work in the classroom. For a program that has leaned on Beamers emphasis on accountability, the process mattered almost as much as the result.
Stewarts response in the game against Florida gave the comeback immediate substance. He was active throughout the contest, finishing with five tackles, a sack and two forced fumbles, the kind of impact that reminds everyone why his return mattered to the Gamecocks in the first place. The bigger story now is whether this becomes more than a one-game redemption and a sign of steady progress from a player South Carolina still clearly needs. [Read more 🡒]
South Carolina Suddenly Has A Cornerback Decision Before Tennessee
Judge Collier leaving early against Florida forced South Carolina to sort through its cornerback depth on the fly, and Damarcus Leach ended up handling the bulk of the work at the position. The quick reshuffle put extra pressure on the secondary, but it also gave the Gamecocks a clearer look at how Leach responds when the snaps pile up.
Shane Beamer came away praising Leachs performance and pointed to the need for a third cornerback to step into a bigger role, especially with Tennessee next on the schedule. Clayton White responded by adjusting coverage to give the corners more help, and that kind of mid-game flexibility could matter again if South Carolina is going to get through the next stretch without further trouble on the back end. Clemsons Guard Depth Takes Another Hit With Zac Foster Down Again
Clemsons guard depth has taken another jolt before the season even gets rolling, with sophomore Zac Foster confirming he tore the ACL in the same knee that had already cost him time before. The injury was diagnosed by MRI on Oct. 12, and there is no timetable for his return, leaving the Tigers to adjust again while one of their younger perimeter options goes back into recovery mode.
Brad Brownell has voiced his support for Foster and said the guard remains involved with the team despite the setback, a small but meaningful note for a program trying to keep some continuity in a spot that has already been tested. For Clemson, the bigger concern is how to absorb another loss in the backcourt while Foster faces another long rehab and the uncertainty that comes with it. [Read more 🡒]
