Deion Barnes Calls For Consistency Amid Key South Carolina Absences

Deion Barnes is focusing on instilling consistency and high standards as South Carolina navigates injuries and develops emerging talent in spring practice.

South Carolina's edge defenders are under new guidance this spring, with Deion Barnes stepping in as coach after a stint at Penn State. As spring camp hits its stride, Barnes is navigating a mix of fresh faces and some sidelined by injury.

Despite these challenges, Barnes emphasizes a consistent standard for all players. "The guys out there are pushed to meet our expectations," he says.

"For those sidelined, it's all about working hard to get back in action. The effort from those on the field has been impressive, with a focus on daily improvement."

Caleb Herring, a standout from the transfer portal, has caught Barnes' eye. "He’s got the SEC experience, with solid tape showcasing his skills as a run defender and pass rusher," Barnes notes. "His veteran presence is invaluable, and he’s been a mentor to younger players."

Julian Walker is also making waves. "His progress from day one to now is evident," Barnes shares. "His natural attributes like length and strength are complemented by a mindset eager to learn and improve."

Dylan Stewart, though not on the field, remains engaged. "He loves the game and supports his teammates, offering insights and encouragement," says Barnes.

Replacing a player like Bryan Thomas Jr. is no small feat, but Barnes focuses on consistency. "It's about who consistently shows up on tape. Consistency is key to stepping up both on the field and as a leader."

Barnes drills the importance of consistency into his players. "Dominance comes from being consistent in every play. Whether it's against the run or in pass rush, doing it right repeatedly is what makes an elite player."

Anthony Addison and Drew Collins are also making their mark. "Ant gives everything on every play, and Drew's effort is clear on tape. Both are applying what they learn, showing daily improvement."

Barnes' approach blends high standards with a supportive environment, aiming to develop not just skilled players but leaders on and off the field.
