Dawn Staleys Clemson Visit Had A Personal Twist Gamecocks Fans Will Notice

Dawn Staley, renowned for her formidable coaching, steps into the stands for a heartfelt reason, showcasing her personal ties to the basketball community beyond her coaching achievements.

Dawn Staley spent Friday night in an unusual spot: Clemson’s Littlejohn Coliseum, wearing a gray American University hoodie and cheering from the stands like any other fan.

The South Carolina coach made the quick trip from Columbia to watch one of her godsons, Madden Collins, in American’s game against Clemson. Collins, a sophomore guard for the Eagles, is the son of Ariana Moore, who played four seasons for Staley at Temple and now serves as Staley’s director of basketball operations at South Carolina.

The ACC Network Extra broadcast caught Staley seated in a regular section inside the arena. Collins rewarded the support with a strong outing, finishing with a team-high 23 points on 10-for-20 shooting in American’s 82-73 loss. The Eagles, a Patriot League team based in Washington, D.C., were within 39-34 at halftime.

Collins has been one of American’s most productive players this season, averaging a team-best 21.5 points per game. He played high school basketball at Irmo before finishing his prep career at Christ School near Asheville, North Carolina. His younger brother, Mason, is also a basketball player and currently suits up at The Tatnall School in Delaware for their father, Mardy Collins, who played at Temple and in the NBA.

According to the Asheville Citizen-Times, Staley is godmother to both Collins boys, and she regularly shows them support on social media.

Staley had the night off after South Carolina practiced Friday afternoon, giving her room to make the trip to Clemson. And she’ll be back at Littlejohn soon enough.

No. 1 South Carolina opened its season with a win over No.

20 Maryland in Paris on Monday, then faces No. 12 UNC in Charlotte on Sunday before heading to Clemson for the annual rivalry game on Thursday, Nov. 12 at 7 p.m. on ESPN2.

Staley has won 15 straight against Clemson and is 15-2 overall versus the Tigers.

South Carolina Gets A Perfect Spot To Keep Rolling At Home

Texas A&M is walking into a difficult setup in Columbia, where the Aggies will face South Carolina on the Gamecocks homecoming weekend at Williams-Brice Stadium. It is the kind of spot that can magnify everything about a road team, especially one still searching for its first road win and coming off three straight away losses.

South Carolina, meanwhile, has earned the chance to enjoy the moment. The Gamecocks have won three straight and pushed themselves up to No. 21 in the College Football Playoff rankings, giving this home date a little more weight than the usual late-season crowd scene. With momentum on their side and the building likely to be lively, they have a chance to keep turning home field into something more than just a backdrop. [Read more 🡒]

Gamecocks Get An Early Test As Strong Start Meets A Tougher Challenge

South Carolinas second game of the 2026-27 season brings a different kind of early-season checkup to Colonial Life Arena, with Southeast Missouri State arriving after a 2-0 start of its own. The Gamecocks opened with a win over Stetson, and now they get a Redhawks team that has already handled Lipscomb and Webster, making this a more revealing early test than a typical nonconference follow-up.

For South Carolina, the matchup offers a chance to see how the first win holds up against a team that has already found some rhythm, while SEMO gets a shot at a Power Four road environment this early in the year. Broadcast details are part of the setup, but the bigger draw is the contrast in momentum, with both teams bringing recent success into a game that should offer a better read on where each stands right now. LaNorris Sellers Injury Suddenly Puts South Carolina's Offense On Edge

LaNorris Sellers gave South Carolina a scare in the second quarter against Texas A&M when an opposing player landed on his left ankle, forcing the Gamecocks to briefly shift their attention from the game plan to their quarterback's health. Sellers was evaluated and X-rays came back negative, which at least offered some immediate relief after the injury looked serious enough to put the offense on edge.

He was back out for halftime warmups, leaving open the possibility of returning for the second half if he could go. Shane Beamer acknowledged the concern around Sellers, but the Gamecocks also had to be ready for the next-man-up scenario, with confidence in backup Cutter Woods if the injury kept Sellers sidelined.
