Darius Gray’s arrival at South Carolina has already made noise, and Shane Beamer made it clear Tuesday that the buzz is coming from more than just recruiting pedigree.
Gray, a former five-star prospect, wasn’t on campus for spring practice because he was one of the 2026 signees who enrolled in the summer. Even without that head start in the spring, he wasted little time making an impression once he got to work. Beamer said the freshman has carried strong momentum from summer workouts into the early days of preseason camp.
At Birdies with Beamer, Randy Clements had already pointed to Gray’s maturity and work ethic in the summer. Beamer followed that up by calling the start to Gray’s college career impressive on and off the field.
"He's pretty impressive. He really is," Beamer said.
"Just as a person. You forget he wasn't even here for spring practice.
He just showed up in the summertime and summer that he had was elite. What he was able to do physically in the summertime was really impressive as a true freshman, and then what he's able to do so far in practice is impressive.
Now, don't get me wrong. It's four days in.
There's a lot of football, and he's got a long ways to go. The initial impressions are really good.
He's got his stuff together, and it's an impressive guy on and off the field."
Beamer also said the staff has already been pushing Gray with a heavy mental load in camp, and the freshman hasn’t flinched. The coach said he pulled Gray aside to check in after the staff piled on more responsibilities, but Gray’s response told Beamer plenty about the way he handles things.
"I pulled him aside yesterday because we're throwing a lot at him and I told him, I'm like, 'Look, man, I know we're throwing a lot at you right now and asking a lot of you. So, if it mentally gets to be too much just make sure you communicate because you're the same person every day but it's OK," Beamer said.
"He's like, 'Coach, I went to St. Christopher's.'

"But his point was like, I can handle it. That's just who he is.
He's the same person every day. He's not on this emotional roller coaster of tough practices and tough challenges mentally.
Just kind of goes about his business, and is going to be a really, really good player here."
Gray, for his part, has already said he’s approaching his first season with a team-first mindset. At South Carolina’s Media Day, he said he’s ready to help wherever he’s needed.
"Just doing whatever they need me to do, especially coming in as a first year," Gray said at South Carolina's Media Day. "Just filling whatever hole they might need, and just playing that role in my first year."
