After nearly a month away from game action, Cross came back with plenty to prove and turned in a loud one on Sept. 25, rolling past Mullins 47-8 for its first win of the season.
The Trojans had been sidelined since their season opener against Woodland on Aug. 28, a game that was called in the second quarter with Woodland getting a 14-8 win after a fight. Following that incident, the South Carolina High School League handed down multiple player suspensions, and Cross was forced to forfeit its next three games. That left the Trojans officially sitting at 0-4 when they finally got back on the field.
Cross coach Shaun Wright said his team had to own what happened, and he credited the players for handling the situation the right way.
“We messed up and we took our punishment,” Wright said. “I was very disappointed in the actions of our team because it did not represent what we are all about here.
But I have to say I am very proud of the way our guys responded. They never pouted.
No one walked away. We rallied together, went back to work, and we tried to put the past behind us and look ahead, It’s good to get back on the field.”
Once the ball was kicked off again, Cross wasted no time taking out its frustration on a winless Mullins squad. Senior running back Mah’ky Green led the charge with three touchdowns, including one on a blocked punt that he took in himself. Wright said, “He literally was all over the field.”
The Trojans now shift into region play, where they entered the season as the heavy favorite in Region 8-A. Next up is winless Burke next Friday night.
Summerville also got back in the win column, snapping a three-game skid with a 58-10 Region 5-AAAAA victory over West Ashley. Jayven Williams powered the Green Wave with 147 rushing yards and three touchdowns in less than a half of work. Williams also made school history, becoming Summerville’s all-time rushing leader and passing DeAngelo Henderson.
Hanahan stayed perfect, moving to 6-0 with a 28-3 win over Colleton County. Tripp Gallus threw for 284 yards and three touchdowns, Nevaehus Gourdine ran for 78 yards and a score, and the Hawks got big production through the air from Quamell Grant and Grayson Mathes.
Grant finished with six catches for 182 yards and a touchdown, while Mathes had six receptions for 101 yards and two scores. Hanahan heads into region play next week with a ranked Class AAA showdown against Oceanside Collegiate.
James Island kept rolling as well, blasting Stratford 56-7 to stay unbeaten. Mykell Warthen ran for 143 yards and three touchdowns, including a 74-yard score on the opening possession. Brady Dantzler added 235 passing yards and three touchdowns, and the Trojans’ defense held Stratford to 114 total yards, including just 13 on the ground.
Colleton Prep took its first loss of the season in a 31-28 defeat to Hilton Head Christian, despite a strong night from quarterback Cale Owens. Owens threw for 134 yards and three touchdowns and also ran for 172 yards and a score.
Pinewood Prep remained undefeated too, blasting Cardinal Newman 49-0 to improve to 6-0. Silas Brawner was sharp, completing 9 of 10 passes for 181 yards and four touchdowns. Tre Green was the top target, catching four passes for 118 yards and three touchdowns.
Bishop England closed out the non-region portion of its schedule with a 42-0 win over Hunter-Kinard-Tyler. The Bishops have now won six straight, jumped out to a 14-0 lead in the first quarter, and were ahead 35-0 by halftime. They open region play Friday against North Charleston.
