After the kind of beating Clemson took from Miami and LSU, it would have been hard to find many people willing to pencil the Tigers into the ACC Championship Game conversation. The odds looked long.
The path looked messy. And the College Football Playoff?
That seemed even harder to picture.
Then Saturday happened.
Clemson rolled past FCS Charleston Southern 37-0, and Dabo Swinney liked what he saw enough to call it the Tigers’ "best game" of the season.
“I think we made a big improvement today on doing the routine things better, but we got to take another step,” Swinney told the media following the game. “There were still some missed opportunities and some plays that we need to make.”
Against an overmatched opponent, Clemson looked sharper on both sides of the ball than it had in those earlier losses. That alone doesn’t settle anything, but it does make the rest of the season a lot more interesting.
The Tigers are 4-2 overall and 2-1 in ACC play, and the conference path in front of them is manageable on paper. Clemson still has Virginia Tech, Florida State, Syracuse, Georgia Tech and Duke left in league play, with South Carolina closing out the regular season.
That schedule matters because Clemson is one of the teams - along with Boston College, Florida State, Georgia Tech and North Carolina - that will play only eight conference games this season while the rest of the league plays nine ACC games. That uneven setup could become a major factor if the standings get tight.
Right now, Clemson is tied for second in the ACC with Wake Forest, SMU and North Carolina, all of whom have one conference loss. The Tigers won’t face Wake Forest or SMU, but they already handled North Carolina 28-20, giving them the tiebreaker there.
The remaining five ACC opponents on Clemson’s schedule have not exactly been lighting the league on fire. Those teams are a combined 16-16 overall and 5-13 in ACC play.
Only Duke, at 4-2, and Virginia Tech, at 5-2, currently own winning records. Clemson will have to travel to face both Florida State and Duke.
If the Tigers sweep the rest of their ACC slate, they would finish either 10-2 or 9-3 depending on what happens against South Carolina in the regular-season finale at Death Valley. The Gamecocks have won the last two meetings in that series.
Miami still looks like the team most likely to claim one spot in Charlotte for the ACC Championship Game, leaving Wake Forest, SMU and Clemson as the main contenders for the other berth.
The twist is what happens if Clemson ends up with the same conference record as Wake Forest and SMU. That could force the league into a tricky resolution, especially since SMU and Wake Forest still have to play each other on Nov. 14, which should knock one of them out of the picture.
The ACC already set the stage for this kind of mess. Back in July, the league announced a new football championship tiebreaker policy for the 2026 season as it moves to a nine-game conference schedule.
The revised system is built around three ideas: head-to-head results matter most; no team should be overrewarded or punished because it played a different number of conference games; and if head-to-head still doesn’t sort things out, the team with the strongest overall body of work gets the nod for the ACC Championship and the conference’s automatic College Football Playoff qualifier.
That policy was approved after ACC athletic directors reviewed the system and ran more than 10,000 simulated season outcomes.
Even so, the phrase “body of work” leaves plenty of room for interpretation. And if Clemson winds up in the middle of a crowded tiebreaker, the final call could come down to something far less tidy: which school brings the biggest crowd to Bank of America Stadium and which one draws the most eyeballs on TV.

Shane Beamer Knows Tennessee's Biggest Week 8 Problem For South Carolina
Shane Beamer is already planning for the uncertainty Tennessee is bringing to Columbia this week. With Josh Heupel still not naming a starter, South Carolina has to get ready for both sophomore George MacIntyre and freshman Faizon Brandon as the Gamecocks prepare to host the No. 11 Volunteers on Oct. 24, just days after their upset win over Florida.
Beamer pointed back to South Carolinas 2022 upset of Tennessee as a reminder that the Gamecocks have already handled this matchup in a big moment, but he also made clear the challenge is different now. Preparing for two quarterbacks means more than a standard game plan, and against a Tennessee team ranked in the top 15, South Carolinas defensive staff has to cover all the bases before kickoff. South Carolina Opens The Season With A Target Fans Will Love
The preseason chatter around womens college basketball has already settled on a familiar spot at the top. The Associated Press put South Carolina No. 1 in its opening top 25, giving the Gamecocks the early bulls-eye that comes with being the program everyone else is chasing. It is a strong sign that, once again, expectations around Dawn Staleys team will be measured in nothing less than a championship pursuit.
Around the rest of the poll, the Big Ten set the pace with nine teams in the top 25, while the SEC followed with seven, a reminder of how crowded the national picture already looks. UCLA, the defending national champion, opened at No. 11 as it begins its title defense, but the spotlight at the very top belongs to South Carolina for now, and the real question is how long it can stay there once the season starts. James Island Carries A Perfect Season Into A High Stakes Road Test
James Island enters the weekend as the areas last unbeaten high school football team, a status it inherited after Bishop England fell to Oceanside Collegiate. The Trojans have already wrapped up the Region 5-AAAAA title, but the work is hardly finished as they head back on the road for a meeting with West Florence, a game that will give them one more chance to protect a perfect season against a fresh challenge.
The matchup is part of a busy slate for area teams, with several other local games on the schedule and records starting to sharpen the stakes around the region. For James Island, though, the spotlight is a little brighter now, because every week from here carries the weight of keeping that unbeaten mark intact. [Read more 🡒]
