South Carolina’s quarterback conversation has gotten loud, but Shane Beamer isn’t entertaining the idea that people outside the program get to make the call.
As the Gamecocks head to Tuscaloosa to face No. 8 Alabama on Saturday night, Beamer pushed back on the growing chatter around LaNorris Sellers and the possibility of a benching. Redshirt freshman Cutter Woods is there if South Carolina decides to go that direction, but Beamer made it clear on Tuesday that the decision process belongs inside the building.
“I see what I see in practice every week, and people on the outside of this building don’t get to decide that,” Shane Beamer said. “We win as a team, we lose as a team.
Are there some throws that LaNorris would like to have back or throws that he would like to make? Yeah, absolutely.
As I told LaNorris, when you lose a football game, the 2 people that get the most blame are the head coach and the quarterback. It’s no different this week, and (we’ll) worry about what we can control.
LaNorris needs to be better. I need to be better.
Our entire team needs to be better.”
The pressure built quickly after Sellers’ Week 3 performance in South Carolina’s home loss to Mississippi State. He threw for 282 yards and 2 touchdowns, but the 2 interceptions were a major part of a night that slipped away from the Gamecocks. What had looked like a chance to move to 3-0 and open SEC play with a win instead turned into a setback, and now the trip to Alabama comes with a very different feel.
Through three games, Sellers has 5 touchdown passes and 3 interceptions, and his QBR sits at 50.5, which ranks 89th in college football.
Beamer said the quarterbacks are always competing, but he did not go as far as announcing any change for Saturday night. The message, for now, was less about a switch and more about keeping the focus inside the program.
