Seahawks Trade Idea Hinges On Whether Eagles Would Move A Star Back

Could Saquon Barkley be the answer to reignite the Seahawks' struggling rushing game and bolster their offensive strategy?

The Seattle Seahawks’ rushing game has become an obvious sore spot through six weeks, and one analyst thinks the answer could be one of the biggest swings on the market.

Seattle finished 2025 as a top-10 rushing team with 2,096 yards on the ground. This season, the offense has slipped to 18th and is averaging only 3.9 yards per carry. The Seahawks are hoping Zach Charbonnet’s return from a torn ACL suffered in January will help stabilize things, but CBS Sports’ Carter Bahns says the issue runs deeper than one injured back.

In Bahns’ view, the real problem is Seattle’s choice not to bring back Kenneth Walker. He called Walker the missing piece and said the most direct fix would be a blockbuster trade with the Philadelphia Eagles for Saquon Barkley.

“He is very much the missing piece, and they will rely on Zach Charbonnet and Jadarian Price to fill that gap when they return from injured reserve. Neither is an established No. 1 running back, though, so Seattle would benefit from admitting it needs a high-caliber starter, then placing Charbonnet back in his more natural secondary role and allowing Price to develop as a rookie third option,” Bahns wrote.

Bahns also pointed to Barkley’s contract as part of what would make any deal complicated, while still arguing Philadelphia could at least listen if it chose to shed salary.

“They would have to pay a hefty price to pry Saquon Barkley away from Philadelphia because of his immense value and his giant cap hit, but with the Eagles poised to watch this season wither away in the wake of countless personnel losses, they should be willing to at least field calls on their superstar running back. Seattle is in as much of a win-now mode as any team in the league and thus is in a position to give up premium draft capital for a player who can help it return to the Super Bowl.”

Barkley signed a two-year, $41.5 million extension before the 2025 season and is under contract through 2028. His cap hits are listed as $9.88 million in 2026, $13 million in 2027 and $17.364 million in 2028, with four void years attached to the deal, which keeps him on the books until 2032.

Philadelphia has given no indication that it wants to move Barkley, but the situation could change if Jalen Hurts is sidelined for the entire season and the Eagles decide to stockpile picks while trimming salary. If that door opens, the Seahawks would have a hard time ignoring it.

Barkley’s appeal is obvious: he brings juice as both a runner and a receiver. A move for him would also keep Seattle from leaning so heavily on Charbonnet or Price and would ease some of the pressure on Sam Darnold.

Seahawks May Be Learning A Painful Truth About Sam Darnold

Sam Darnolds first season in Seattle has been a reminder that a quarterbacks environment can change everything. After looking far more comfortable earlier in the year, his play has slid into troubling territory, with his numbers now sitting near the bottom among qualified quarterbacks and raising fresh questions about what the Seahawks have in him moving forward.

Jason La Canfora has pointed to the kind of roster churn that can quietly reshape an offense, noting the departures of offensive coordinator Klint Kubiak and running back Kenneth Walker III as possible reasons for the regression. Walker, meanwhile, is thriving with the Kansas City Chiefs, who remain undefeated, which only adds to the sting for Seattle as it tries to figure out what went wrong and whether Darnold can still steady the offense. Seahawks Run Game Issue May Be Easier To Fix Than Fans Think

The Seahawks run game has been one of the quieter concerns of the season, and the numbers help explain why. Seattle sits 18th in yards per carry and 30th in EPA per rush, a rough combination for an offense that has wanted more balance. Analyst Daniel Jeremiah pointed to the injury-depleted backfield as a major reason, noting that rookie Jadarian Price is on injured reserve and the current primary backs have not provided the same burst in explosive runs.

There may be a relatively straightforward path to improvement, though, if the roster can get healthier. The possible returns of Zach Charbonnet and Price would give Seattle more options and, in theory, more juice in a ground game that has lacked it for much of the season. For a team trying to stabilize its offense, the fix might not require a scheme overhaul so much as a healthier rotation in the backfield. [Read more 🡒]

Texans Linked To A Big Backfield Idea For Strouds Offense

The idea of Saquon Barkley becoming available has naturally drawn attention beyond Philadelphia, and Seattle is among the teams that could fit into that conversation. For the Seahawks, the appeal is obvious: a proven running back with burst, versatility and the ability to tilt a game in a hurry is the kind of addition that can change how an offense is defended.

Houston is also in the mix as a team that could use that kind of boost around C.J. Strouds offense, which is why the speculation has picked up. The wrinkle is Barkleys age, since he is approaching 30 and that complicates how much value teams are willing to put on a trade, leaving this more as an intriguing possibility than a move that feels close to reality.
