The Seattle Seahawks finished the preseason with a 9-9 tie against the Kansas City Chiefs at Arrowhead Stadium, and the final kick nearly turned it into a win. Jason Myers lined up for a 52-yard field goal as time expired, but the attempt sailed wide right and the game stayed tied.
For Seattle, the biggest bright spot was Jalen Milroe. He turned in his best outing yet with the Seahawks, completing 16 of 26 passes for 223 yards and a touchdown while adding 20 rushing yards on seven carries. His scoring drive came in the third quarter, when he guided a 10-play, 52-yard march that ended with a four-yard touchdown pass to veteran tight end Nick Vannett.
Milroe needed exactly this kind of performance to strengthen his case for the roster, and he should be on the 53-man roster by Sunday’s deadline.
Jacardia Wright, on the other hand, did not make the same kind of impression. Given a chance to push his way onto the roster, he managed 15 carries for 33 yards, good for just over 2 yards per carry, and added one catch for 11 yards.
With Zach Charbonnet, Jadarian Price, George Holani and Emanuel Wilson ahead of him on the depth chart, Wright was already facing a steep climb. His touchdown last week against the Tennessee Titans had opened the door a little, but this performance makes it look very unlikely he’ll crack the 53-man roster.
If he clears waivers, the practice squad still appears to be a realistic landing spot.
The secondary got a boost from Diggs in his Seahawks debut. He wasted no time getting involved, intercepting Chiefs quarterback Garrett Nussmeier. Diggs played only three series, but it was enough to knock off some rust before Seattle opens the season on Sept. 9 against the New England Patriots.
At cornerback, the team appears set to finish the 53-man roster with Devon Witherspoon, Josh Jobe, rookie Julian Neal and either Nehemiah Pritchett or Noah Igbinoghene.
Myers’ preseason struggles continued in the tie. The missed 52-yarder at the end was only part of the story, since he also missed an extra point earlier.
That miss mattered because it left the door open for the Chiefs to tie the game in the first place. If Myers had converted the extra point, Seattle would have held a 10-9 lead and likely could have run out the clock.
Instead, the Seahawks were forced to chase points at the end, and Myers couldn’t finish the job. His confidence is not where it needs to be, and that remains a concern. He’ll need to rediscover the version of himself who broke a record in the Super Bowl just over six months ago.
