Jason Myers has been a steady hand for the Seahawks since 2019, but preseason has a way of turning even the most secure jobs into a weekly stress test. In a league where every roster usually carries just one kicker, a rough stretch can put a player on the edge fast - and Seattle may already be keeping one eye on an alternative.
Myers’ preseason wasn’t clean. He missed both field goals and extra points, though not all of the damage landed squarely on him.
If those issues carry into the regular season, the Seahawks could be forced to look elsewhere before long. That’s where Blake Grupe enters the picture.
Grupe was part of a kicking competition with the Indianapolis Colts in camp and preseason, going up against Spencer Shrader. Grupe had the better camp, but Shrader clearly won the preseason battle and earned the job. That doesn’t make Grupe a bad option; it just means Indy had two kickers who could have filled the role for plenty of teams.
Now Grupe is with the New York Jets, who picked him up after he was waived during final roster cuts. But instead of settling the position, the Jets have brought in multiple kickers to fight for the job, which opens the door for Grupe to wind up available again. If that happens, Seattle could have a ready-made fallback.
The Seahawks are going to give Myers every chance to hold onto the job. He was outstanding in the playoffs and Super Bowl last season when the pressure was at its highest. But Seattle can’t afford to wait forever if the early-season version of Myers looks anything like the preseason one.
FanSided’s Adam Fromal, for instance, had Myers ranked last in kicker performance rankings for the 2026 preseason, and not by a little. In Seattle’s three preseason games ahead of the 2026 season, Myers missed two of four extra-point tries and three of five field goal attempts. Two of those five field goals came from inside 50 yards.
The missed extra points came after Seattle was flagged for excessive celebration following touchdowns, which turned those attempts into 48-yard kicks instead of the usual 33-yard tries. Even so, that’s still a kick NFL teams expect to make.
Grupe has shown he can handle that range. He has made 19 of 27 kicks from beyond 50 yards in his career. After a short rough patch last season with the New Orleans Saints, he was released, then signed with the Colts and drilled all 11 of his field goal attempts, including four from beyond 50 yards, while also going perfect on all 10 extra-point tries.
The Seahawks will hope Myers’ preseason form was just that - preseason form. But if the 35-year-old carries those issues into the regular season, Seattle may need to move quickly. If that happens, Blake Grupe could be the name waiting on the Jets roster.
