Seahawks Stun With Record-Breaking Special Teams Feat This Season

Seahawks double down on special teams prowess, re-signing key contributors to maintain their Super Bowl-caliber edge.

The Seattle Seahawks' special teams unit was nothing short of spectacular during their recent Super Bowl journey. With five special teams touchdowns spread across the regular season and playoffs, they joined an elite group of just 10 teams in the Super Bowl era to achieve such a feat. Their prowess didn’t stop there-they blocked two field goals, a punt, and boasted one of the league's top kick coverage units, earning them the No. 2 spot in FTN Fantasy’s special teams DVOA metric.

This offseason, the Seahawks are clearly committed to maintaining this high level of special teams excellence. A key move was re-signing Rashid Shaheed, the electrifying wide receiver and return specialist who turned heads with two kick return touchdowns and a crucial punt return score late in the season.

But Seattle's strategy didn’t end with Shaheed. They brought back Brady Russell, the unofficial special teams captain who led the team with 14 special teams tackles. Chazz Surratt, who was right behind Russell with 11 tackles, is also set to return.

The Seahawks added D’Anthony Bell, who was crucial with the fourth-most special teams snaps last season. Long snapper Chris Stoll is reportedly returning, and Cody White, known for his four kick returns totaling 106 yards last year and a blocked punt in 2024, is back in the fold.

Former NFL quarterback Brock Huard, speaking on Seattle Sports’ Brock and Salk, emphasized the Seahawks' dedication to special teams. “They’ve brought back every special teams demon they have,” Huard noted.

“All of their core special teams guys, guess what they’re doing? They’re coming back here.

Because I know it isn’t just talk.”

Huard’s confidence in Seattle’s strategy is clear: “That No. 1 special teams unit in the league won them some games last year, and more than likely will win them more in 2026.”
