Sam Darnold’s first quarter against the New England Patriots turned tense in a hurry.
Seattle opened Week 1 with some early rhythm, sparked by a 13-yard run from Jadarian Price and a 13-yard completion from Darnold to 2025 NFL Offensive Player of the Year Jaxon Smith-Njigba. A nine-yard run by George Holani helped the Seahawks move into second-and-one, but the drive stalled after a penalty and an incompletion. On third-and-six, Dre'Mont Jones got to Darnold for a five-yard sack, and Seattle had to punt.
The bigger concern came right after the play. Darnold limped off the field and headed to the sideline, where he initially didn’t receive attention. During the Patriots’ next possession, he moved to the blue medical tent with what appeared to be a leg injury.
Darnold tried to shake it off at first, waving away the training staff and working on the sideline to loosen up. He eventually went into the tent, then later walked to the locker room on his own power. His return is questionable because of a hip injury.

For Seattle, the timing matters. Darnold has been durable over the last two seasons, playing all 17 games for the Minnesota Vikings in 2024 and then all 17 games plus the postseason for the Seahawks.
With Darnold sidelined for now, Drew Lock stepped in. Seattle has experience there, too.
Lock was a second-round pick by the Denver Broncos in 2019 and has played in 41 games with 28 starts. He owns a 10-18 record as a starter and is 1-1 for the Seahawks, with both of those starts coming in 2023.
Lock has completed 59.6 percent of his passes for 6,369 yards, with 34 touchdown passes and 28 interceptions. He’s in his second stint with Seattle after being sent there in the Russell Wilson trade in 2022. He spent 2024 with the New York Giants before returning to the Seahawks in 2025.
