Seahawks May Have A Surprise Week 2 Spark Fans Will Love

With creative strategies in play, the Seahawks are poised to surprise the Cardinals with Jalen Milroe's dynamic potential in Week 2.

The Seahawks may have stumbled into a little offensive wrinkle for Week 2, and it comes with Jalen Milroe.

Seattle is 1-0 heading into its matchup with the Arizona Cardinals, but the path there got a lot stranger than expected. Sam Darnold is dealing with a strange hip/glute injury, which left Drew Lock as the quarterback for most of Week 1.

Lock handled the job well enough to beat the New England Patriots, and now he’s lined up to start again in Week 2. That puts Milroe in the backup role, but it also opens the door for something a little more creative.

ESPN’s Dan Graziano said he’s “interested” to see whether the Seahawks build in specific plays or packages for Milroe that take advantage of his running ability and give the offense a little extra juice.

That idea fits the way Seattle likes to think on offense. Milroe doesn’t need a heavy workload to matter. His rushing skill makes him a potential goal-line threat, and he could also be a natural fit for a trick play or gadget package that forces Arizona to account for one more moving part.

He could even help without touching the football.

Just having Milroe on the field could be enough to tilt the defense’s attention and create confusion. The Kansas City Chiefs pulled off a version of that in Week 1 against the Denver Broncos, putting Justin Fields and Patrick Mahomes on the field together. It ended with a Kenneth Walker III touchdown on a pop pass from Mahomes, and Fields’ presence drew plenty of eyes from the Broncos’ defense.

Seattle could take a similar approach with Milroe. He may not be asked to do much, but his presence alone could become part of the game plan.

Assuming Darnold is out, Milroe will be active on Sunday. And if the Seahawks are looking for a spark against the Cardinals, using him in a small but specific role would make plenty of sense.

Seahawks Just Got A Crucial Sam Darnold Timeline Update

Sam Darnolds glute injury has pushed the Seahawks into an early-season wait-and-see stretch, and the initial timeline gives Seattle a much clearer sense of how long it may need to lean on its backup plan. Darnold is expected to miss at least Week 2 against the Arizona Cardinals, and there is now a real possibility he also sits out Week 3 against the Washington Commanders as the team manages the soft-tissue issue.

Ian Rapoports update suggests the quarterback could be back by Week 3, which would keep the absence to one or two games instead of something longer. In the meantime, Drew Locks strong showing in Week 1 gave Seattle a steadier hand than it might have hoped for once Darnold went down, and that matters with division and conference games already on the schedule. Seahawks Hint At A Defensive Need As Week 2 Uncertainty Grows

With Sam Darnold still dealing with an injury and Drew Lock likely set to take the reins for Week 2 against the Arizona Cardinals, the Seahawks are spending part of their preparation time looking beyond the quarterback room. Seattle worked out three defensive players this week, a sign that the team is at least exploring ways to add depth as the early-season roster picture starts to come into focus.

Among the names brought in was undrafted rookie Larry Worth III, who previously spent time with the San Francisco 49ers. The other two defensive options, Devan Boykin and Austin Keys, also bring NFL experience from other stops, giving Seattle a few different looks as it weighs whether there is a fit on that side of the ball. Mike Macdonalds Defense Is Changing How Fans See These Seahawks

The early returns under Mike Macdonald have given Seahawks fans something they have not always had in recent seasons: a defense that looks organized, disruptive and capable of changing a game in a hurry. Seattles latest strong showing featured a fourth quarter with three interceptions and three sacks, the kind of closing stretch that turns a solid afternoon into a statement about how far the unit has come.

Macdonald has pointed to the work of his coaching staff and the players ability to adapt as the reasons the scheme is starting to take hold, and the results have backed that up. The Seahawks have now gone 29 straight games without allowing a 100-yard rusher, a run that speaks to how sturdy the front has been even as the offense waits on the uncertain status of starting quarterback Sam Darnold.
