TreVeyon Henderson’s ankle scare may not end up costing him Week 1 after all.
The Patriots running back was dealing with uncertainty after he went down in practice, but The Boston Globe’s Christopher Price reported that Henderson avoided any major injury. Price said, “TreVeyon Henderson should be ‘good to go’ for Week 1 of the regular season, as a league source indicated he avoided a serious right ankle injury when he slipped on the turf at practice earlier in the week,”
That would be a welcome development for New England, which needs as much help as it can get heading into its season opener against the Seattle Seahawks. Henderson’s status had been the big question after the injury, especially with the game still a week away and the team still waiting to see how he responds.
For now, the Patriots have three running backs on the roster after Sunday’s deadline: Henderson, Rhamondre Stevenson and Corey Kiner. New England acquired Kiner in a trade last week, and coach Vrabel has already made clear he likes what he sees.
“Somebody we liked last year and wanted to try to acquire last year,” Vrabel said about Kiner. “He went somewhere else.
He had a really good preseason.”
Henderson still has not practiced since getting hurt, but the timeline gives him some breathing room before kickoff. If he’s unable to go, Stevenson would appear to be the likely option to start over Kiner in the opener.
