The Seattle Seahawks, fresh off their Super Bowl triumph, are facing a significant shake-up as the NFL free agency period unofficially kicks off. Key departures include running back Kenneth Walker III, pass rusher Boye Mafe, and cornerback Coby Bryant, all of whom have agreed to join new teams. Official contracts will be inked on Wednesday, marking the start of the NFL's new year.
CBS Sports analyst Logan Ryan, who knows a thing or two about winning with his two Super Bowl rings from his time with the Patriots, didn't hold back on his thoughts about Seattle's future. He pointed out the challenges of repeating as champions when vital players exit. "Good luck trying to repeat," Ryan remarked, highlighting a common misstep by front offices that sometimes overestimate their ability to replace stars through the draft.
Ryan also noted the departure of offensive coordinator Klint Kubiak, who has taken the reins as head coach of the Las Vegas Raiders. It's another layer of change for a team in transition.
Seattle's departing trio were all 2022 draft picks. Walker is set to join the Kansas City Chiefs, Mafe is headed to the Cincinnati Bengals, and Bryant will don the Chicago Bears uniform.
Walker, at 25, was a standout in the Seahawks' Super Bowl victory over the Patriots, rushing for 135 yards and earning MVP honors. He stepped up as the main back after an injury to Zach Charbonnet in the playoffs. His regular-season stats were impressive too, with over 1,000 rushing yards and five touchdowns, plus 31 receptions for 282 yards.
Mafe, a 27-year-old defensive end, had a more limited role last season, starting just four games but still making an impact with 31 tackles, two sacks, and a forced fumble.
Bryant, who will turn 27 soon, was a key figure in the secondary, starting 15 games and recording 66 tackles, four interceptions, and a forced fumble.
Despite these losses, the Seahawks have managed to retain some talent. They've secured receiver and kick returner Rashid Shaheed on a three-year, $51 million deal, and cornerback Josh Jobe is returning on a three-year, $24 million contract. These moves show Seattle's commitment to maintaining a competitive edge, even as they navigate the challenges of roster turnover.
