The Seahawks have made their call at offensive coordinator, bringing in Brian Fleury to take over the role from Klint Kubiak. Fleury’s path to this point has been anything but conventional. He was a college quarterback at Maryland and Towson, going undrafted in 2003, but he didn’t walk away from the game.
Instead, he started building his coaching résumé right back where he played-returning to Maryland as a graduate assistant. From there, he began climbing the NFL coaching ladder, starting with the Bills in 2013 as a quality control coach.
By 2014, he was in Cleveland, and a year later, he was coaching the Browns’ outside linebackers. But what makes Fleury’s background especially intriguing is the blend of roles he’s taken on.
After Cleveland, he headed to Miami, not as a position coach, but as a research analyst and later as director of football research. That analytical edge gave him a different lens on the game-one that’s become increasingly valuable in today’s NFL.
In 2019, Fleury joined the 49ers under Kyle Shanahan, starting on the defensive side as a quality control coach. But his transition to the offensive staff as tight ends coach and run game coordinator really showcased his versatility. San Francisco’s offense has long been known for its creativity and physicality in the run game, and Fleury had a front-row seat-and a hand in shaping it.
He was even in the mix for the Patriots’ offensive coordinator job in 2024, which tells you his name has been on shortlists around the league. Now, Seattle is handing him the keys.
There’s still plenty to learn about what Fleury’s version of the Seahawks offense will look like. But if his journey tells us anything, it’s that he brings a rare combination of on-field experience, analytical acumen, and a deep understanding of both sides of the ball. That’s the kind of profile that could help unlock the full potential of a Seattle offense looking to take the next step.
