Seahawks Get Surprise Second Shot At Key Move

The Seahawks may seize an unexpected opportunity to bolster their defensive lineup with a strategic acquisition.

The Seattle Seahawks are facing a bit of a defensive reshuffle after losing some key pieces to free agency. But there might be a silver lining on the horizon. With the Cleveland Browns stepping away from a deal with Buffalo Bills edge rusher AJ Epenesa, the Seahawks could find themselves with an unexpected opportunity.

Cleveland's decision came after Epenesa's physical raised some flags. While the specifics of the "failed" physical remain under wraps, it’s known that Epenesa dealt with a few injuries last season, including a concussion, a foot issue, and a neck problem. None were thought to be long-term concerns, but the Browns decided to pass, leaving Epenesa back on the market.

Now, the Seahawks might have a chance to swoop in. With a healthy cap space of $33,227,183, Seattle could potentially bring Epenesa into a rotation featuring Uchenna Nwosu, DeMarcus Lawrence, and Derick Hall. While Epenesa wouldn't directly replace Boye Mafe-who moved to the Cincinnati Bengals-he could still offer valuable pass-rushing depth.

Epenesa, at 27, has shown resilience, missing no more than two games in any season since 2022. His knack for pressuring quarterbacks makes him a compelling addition, even if he’s more suited for third-down situations than setting a firm edge against the run.

For a one-year, $5 million deal, the Seahawks could see if head coach Mike Macdonald can work his magic. Known for developing talent, Macdonald might just turn Epenesa into a standout performer. It’s a gamble, but one that could pay off handsomely for Seattle.
