The Seahawks have quietly taken a look at former Cowboys safety Donovan Wilson, and the fit raises an obvious question: what exactly do Seattle’s brass see in him?
On paper, Wilson looks a lot like Jamal Adams-lite. He’s at his best when he can play downhill, attack the line of scrimmage and bring some linebacker flavor to the safety spot. The problem is the part that matters most for a defensive back: pass coverage.
Wilson is 31 years old, 6 feet and 205 pounds, and his recent numbers are rough. He has posted a quarterback rating allowed of at least 121.3 in each of the past two seasons.
Over that stretch, he has been targeted 73 times, allowed 54 completions and given up 13 touchdowns. He has intercepted just three passes and broken up five more, which means he allowed five more touchdowns than he disrupted.
That’s not exactly the profile of a clean fit at safety, which is why Seattle’s interest feels a little more layered. The Seahawks already have a solid group there, including Julian Love, Ty Okada, Bud Clark and, sometimes, Nick Emmanwori. So maybe the visit is about something else entirely.
One possibility is that Seattle views Wilson the way it once viewed Adams: as a player who could move inside and work as an inside linebacker. He does have the kind of build and temperament that could make sense there.
He’s stout against the run, and he can be used on blitzes. Wilson has recorded double-digit quarterback pressures in two of the last four seasons, and he posted 4.5 sacks in 2024.
He had five sacks in 2022, and every other season has brought some level of production in that area.
There is at least one connection to Seattle in the mix. Aden Durde, the Seahawks’ current defensive coordinator, was the defensive line coach for the Cowboys before joining Seattle. Durde wasn’t Wilson’s position coach, but the link is there.
Still, the bigger takeaway is that John Schneider has earned the benefit of the doubt. If the general manager sees something in a player, there’s usually a reason.
And Mike Macdonald has a reputation as a defensive back whisperer, which only adds to the intrigue. If anyone can find a role for Wilson, it would be Macdonald.
