Seahawks Eye Former Star Clowney for Key Roster Boost

With the Seahawks needing to fill defensive gaps, reuniting Jadeveon Clowney with coach Mike Macdonald could be the strategic move Seattle requires.

The Seattle Seahawks are navigating the challenges of free agency, having parted ways with some key players. Now, they're on the hunt for replacements, and veteran edge rusher Jadeveon Clowney could be a perfect fit. Clowney, who thrived under Mike Macdonald's defensive schemes with the Baltimore Ravens in 2023, is no stranger to Seattle fans, having played for the Seahawks back in 2019.

The Seahawks' roster changes were inevitable, given the need to pay standout players like Kenneth Walker and Boye Mafe. As it stands, Seattle hasn't splurged on high-priced free agents, leaving them with a comfortable $38 million in cap space, according to Spotrac.

So why not consider bringing Clowney back into the fold? With a market value of $5.7 million for 2026, he's an affordable option for Seattle. The team successfully executed a similar strategy last offseason by signing DeMarcus Lawrence, who delivered an impressive performance at 33, helping the Seahawks to a Super Bowl victory.

Clowney, despite his frequent team changes, continues to be a force on the field. Last season with the Cowboys, he racked up 8.5 sacks and 12 tackles for loss.

His familiarity with Macdonald's system could make for a seamless transition, allowing him to effectively fill the void left by Boye Mafe. This would maintain the strength of Seattle's edge rush, alongside Lawrence, Derrick Hall, and Uchenna Nwosu.

While Clowney might not be a long-term solution, his presence could be invaluable. He would provide veteran leadership and depth, giving any incoming rookies time to adjust to the NFL's demands.

The Seahawks have seen significant departures, including Mafe, cornerback Riq Woolen, and safety Coby Bryant, with their replacements yet to be secured. Clowney's addition could help bridge the gap, ensuring that Seattle's defense remains competitive without breaking the bank.
