Seahawks Eagles Matchup Suddenly Looks Very Different Without Jalen Hurts

Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts faces a season-ending setback due to serious health concerns, thrusting the team into a challenging phase as they gear up to face the Seattle Seahawks in Week 15.

Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts is expected to miss the rest of the season because of blood clots in his lungs, according to a person familiar with the situation who spoke to The Associated Press on Monday.

The Eagles moved Hurts to injured reserve Saturday, two days after the team disclosed that he had a blood clot in his calf. He sat out Philadelphia’s loss to the Carolina Panthers on Sunday, the first of at least four games he will miss.

The team and Hurts’ agent, Nicole Lynn, gave a more detailed update Monday, saying he has deep vein thrombosis and a bilateral pulmonary emboli, meaning a blood clot has moved from the legs to the lungs. His treatment includes blood thinners, and he cannot take part in football activities until he is off them.

The Eagles and Lynn said Hurts is expected to fully recover. Their statement said, “He is clinically stable and has no significant functional limitations.”

Philadelphia (2-4) is scheduled to host the defending Super Bowl champion Seattle Seahawks (3-3) on Saturday, Dec. 19, in a Week 15 meeting of NFC division champs from last season.

The Eagles said Hurts was hurt when he took a cleat to his calf area on Oct. 4 against the Los Angeles Rams. He told the medical staff about the injury after practice on Oct. 8, then returned to practice the next day before the team headed to London for its game against Jacksonville. Specialists in London initially diagnosed him with a left calf superficial vein thrombosis.

Before this setback, Hurts had not missed more than two games in a season since taking over as the full-time starter in 2021. In that span, he has helped lead Philadelphia to five straight playoff berths, three NFC East titles and two Super Bowl trips, including a 40-22 win over the Chiefs two years ago.

Tanner McKee got the start in Hurts’ place against Carolina and completed 26 of 45 passes for 215 yards and a touchdown in the Eagles’ 25-14 defeat. Philadelphia has now dropped four straight for the first time since 2020.

Hurts has thrown for 933 yards this season with eight touchdown passes and three interceptions. He is in the middle of a five-year, $255 million extension that includes $179.3 million guaranteed and runs through the 2028 season.

The Eagles selected Hurts out of Oklahoma in the second round in 2020, a move that surprised plenty of fans at the time because Carson Wentz appeared locked in as the starter and the roster had other obvious needs. Hurts eventually overtook Wentz and grew into one of the NFL’s top quarterbacks.

Seahawks Suddenly Have A Tight End Problem They Can't Ignore

Elijah Arroyos shoulder injury has pushed the Seahawks into a spot they cant really gloss over at tight end, especially with the severity still being sorted out after the recent game. Seattle moved quickly by signing veteran Josiah Deguara to the practice squad, a clear sign the team wanted another body in the room while it waits for a better read on Arroyos timeline.

The timing makes the situation more delicate because the Seahawks are also waiting on another key offensive update in running back Zach Charbonnet, who has been sidelined with an ACL injury. Even if Arroyos absence turns out to be manageable, Seattle is suddenly navigating depth concerns at multiple spots, and what happens next at tight end could shape how the offense handles the next stretch. Seahawks Defense Has One Frustrating Flaw Fans Can't Ignore

The Seahawks have spent enough time around the top of the league conversation defensively to know where the frustration is coming from. But the red-zone numbers have become impossible to overlook, with Seattle allowing touchdowns on 75% of opponents' red-zone drives this season, a sharp drop from last year's 50%. In the overtime loss to Denver, that issue surfaced again when the Broncos finished both of their red-zone chances with touchdowns, leaving Seattle to chase the game in a spot where its defense has usually been expected to hold firm.

Brock Huard added to the criticism after the game, pointing to specific plays where the Seahawks failed to keep Denver out of the end zone. For a unit with bigger ambitions, the concern is not just the single loss but the pattern underneath it, one that keeps showing up in the tightest moments and keeps turning strong defensive stretches into costly breakdowns. Until that changes, Seattle's defense will keep inviting the same uncomfortable questions. [Read more 🡒]

Seahawks Are Taking A Chance On An Overlooked Run Game Fix

The Seahawks added a couple of familiar-looking pieces to the practice squad this week, signing undrafted rookie fullback Jackson Acker and tight end Josiah Deguara. It is the kind of move that usually flies under the radar in midseason, but for a team still looking for answers in the run game, it stands out as more than just roster churn.

Acker brings the sort of size and speed that can matter in short-yardage and in creating cleaner paths for the backs, which is part of why Seattle is taking a look. The broader issue has been the Seahawks' recent rushing struggles, and the team may be hoping this new mix of personnel can give them another option as they map out what the ground game looks like in upcoming games.
