Seahawks Bring Back Two Starters and Make One More Bold Move

With key defensive contributors returning from injury, the Seahawks shake up their roster ahead of a crucial Week 14 matchup.

The Seattle Seahawks are getting some key reinforcements back just in time for a pivotal Week 14 clash. On Saturday, the team officially activated nose tackle Jarran Reed and safety Julian Love from injured reserve, signaling a major boost for both the defensive front and secondary. They also elevated running back Velus Jones to the active roster, adding some depth and versatility to their offensive unit.

Let’s start with Reed. The 32-year-old veteran is no stranger to Seattle fans.

Originally drafted by the Seahawks in the second round back in 2016, Reed’s journey has been a winding one - from his early years anchoring the defensive line in Seattle, to stints with the Chiefs and Packers, and then back to the Pacific Northwest. He rejoined the Seahawks in 2023 on a two-year, $10.8 million deal, and clearly made enough of an impression to earn a three-year, $25 million extension.

Before landing on IR, Reed had played in eight games this season, notching 17 tackles and 1.5 sacks across two starts. While those numbers might not jump off the stat sheet, his value goes beyond the box score.

Reed’s presence in the middle of the line helps set the tone against the run and gives Seattle's pass rush more flexibility. His return is a welcome sight for a defense that’s been looking to re-establish its physical identity down the stretch.

Then there’s Julian Love, who’s quietly become one of the more reliable pieces in Seattle’s secondary. Drafted by the Giants in the fourth round back in 2019, Love made his way to Seattle in 2023 and has since earned a three-year extension worth up to $36 million. That tells you all you need to know about how the Seahawks view his role in their long-term plans.

In limited action this season - just three games - Love has already made an impact with 18 tackles, one sack, and two pass breakups. He brings a smart, instinctive presence to the back end of the defense, and his versatility allows Seattle to get creative with their coverages. Whether playing deep or stepping up into the box, Love gives the Seahawks a much-needed chess piece as they gear up for a playoff push.

As for Velus Jones, his elevation to the active roster adds another wrinkle to the Seahawks’ offense and special teams. While he hasn’t had a major role this season, his speed and return ability could be a factor, especially in tight field-position battles.

With Reed and Love back in the fold, Seattle is getting healthier at the right time. And in a tightly packed NFC playoff race, every snap - and every player - matters.
