Russell Wilsons Next Football Move Will Catch Broncos Fans Off Guard

Russell Wilson's storied NFL career and connection to NC State may pave his way to a new leadership role as he interviews for the head coaching position at his alma mater.

Russell Wilson’s next football chapter may not be on the field at all. According to Adam Schefter, the former Giants, Broncos, Steelers, and Seahawks quarterback interviewed Tuesday for North Carolina State’s head coaching job.

The connection to NC State runs deep. Wilson played for the Wolfpack from 2007 to 2010 before transferring to Wisconsin, and now the school has reportedly at least explored him for the top job.

Wilson, 37, announced his retirement from the NFL in June and agreed to join CBS as an analyst after stepping away from playing. Back in May, reports said he was weighing a television role against a chance to sign with the Jets as a backup to Geno Smith. The Jets offered him a contract after a visit, but he ultimately chose the broadcast booth.

His path to this point has been a winding one. Wilson entered the league as a third-round pick by the Seahawks in 2012, then landed a four-year, $140 million extension with a $65 million signing bonus after the team had him on a five-year, $89.142 million deal. Seattle later sent him to the Broncos in 2022 in a blockbuster trade, and Wilson then agreed to a new five-year, $245 million extension with $165 million in guaranteed money.

That deal never fully took shape. The Broncos released him before he reached the new portion of the contract and took on a record $85 million dead cap hit. Wilson then signed a one-year deal with the Steelers for the veteran minimum, followed by another one-year pact with the Giants for the 2025 season.

In 2025, Wilson played six games for New York, starting three. He completed 58 percent of his passes for 831 yards, three touchdowns and three interceptions, and added 18 carries for 106 yards.

Over 14 NFL seasons, Wilson appeared in 205 games and made 202 starts. He finished with 46,966 passing yards, 353 touchdown passes and 114 interceptions, while also rushing 1,042 times for 5,568 yards and 31 touchdowns. He was selected to 10 Pro Bowls.

Seahawks May Not Be Done After Their Biggest Trade Yet

The Seahawks already made the kind of move that can reshape a season, landing six-time All-Pro guard Quenton Nelson from the Colts before the NFL trade deadline. For a team trying to keep building around its roster in the middle of the year, it was the sort of aggressive swing that signaled Seattle was not content to stand pat.

John Schneider has since made it clear the work may not be finished, with Seattle still in trade conversations as the deadline approaches. Running back, wide receiver and edge rusher remain the most obvious areas to watch, and ESPN has already pointed to several candidates who could fit what the Seahawks are looking for if they decide to keep adding. DeForest Buckners Colts Exit Just Took On A New Twist

The Colts decision to bring in Quenton Nelson has already started to reshape the conversation around their offensive line, and it has a ripple effect that reaches well beyond Indianapolis. For Seattle, it is another reminder of how quickly roster moves can change a players role, especially for someone like Anthony Bradford, who had been in the starting mix before the upgrade at guard altered the depth chart.

Mike Macdonald addressed Bradfords situation with the kind of measured tone teams usually reserve for a player they still value. He made clear that Bradford remains important to the Seahawks and expected him to handle the shift professionally, even as the competition in front of him tightened. In a league where starting jobs can disappear fast, the real test now is how Bradford responds to the change. [Read more 🡒]

Russell Wilsons Next Career Move Will Catch Seahawks Fans Off Guard

Russell Wilsons post-playing career already has taken him into the broadcast booth, but his name has now surfaced in a far different kind of football conversation. The former Seahawks quarterback interviewed for the North Carolina State head coaching job after Dave Doeren was fired, a development that ties Wilson back to the school where he once starred before his NFL rise.

Wilson is currently working as a CBS Sports analyst, so a move into college coaching would be a major pivot from the role fans have seen him in most recently. He is not the only former quarterback linked to the opening, either, with Philip Rivers also having engaged in discussions about coaching at NC State, adding another layer to an already intriguing search.
