In a move aimed at fortifying their offensive front, the New England Patriots have signed veteran offensive lineman James Hudson to a one-year deal. This decision comes on the heels of a tough Super Bowl loss to the Seattle Seahawks, where the Patriots' protection faltered at critical moments, leaving quarterback Drake Maye vulnerable.
Shoring Up the Front Line
James Hudson arrives in Foxborough after a tumultuous season with the New York Giants. While not the marquee name fans might have hoped for, Hudson's addition brings valuable experience to a line in need of stability.
Last year, the Patriots allowed 47 sacks, with their struggles peaking during the Super Bowl as the Seahawks' relentless pass rush overwhelmed them. Hudson, a 2021 fourth-round pick, has played 60 games and offers versatility with his ability to cover both tackle positions.
This acquisition may also signal a shift for sophomore standout Will Campbell. The 2025 first-round pick endured a challenging rookie season, starting 13 games before a knee injury cut his year short.
Though he returned for the postseason, the Seahawks' edge rushers exposed his weaknesses. There's talk of moving Campbell inside to guard, where his power can be maximized and his shorter arm length won't be as much of a hindrance.
“We saw what happened when our protection broke down in the big one. Drake is the engine of this team, and we can’t let him take those hits. Signing a guy like Hudson is about making sure we have bodies who have seen NFL speed,” a source from the Patriots' personnel team shared.
Looking Ahead to Pittsburgh
Ensuring the protection of Drake Maye, who led the league with a 113.5 passer rating last season, remains a top priority. Maye's impressive 4,394 yards and 31 touchdowns are a testament to his talent, but his performance dips when he's under duress.
Hudson's signing is a step in the right direction, but the real test will come in the 2026 NFL Draft in Pittsburgh. With substantial draft capital at their disposal, the Patriots are poised to pursue another key piece for their offensive line, aiming to rewrite the narrative from their Super Bowl stumble and secure a solid pocket for Maye in the upcoming season.
