Dre Greenlaw’s latest run-in with the league will cost him at least one game, and maybe more if his appeal doesn’t get traction.
The NFL suspended the 49ers linebacker one game without pay Monday for unsportsmanlike conduct after he headbutted Seahawks linebacker Ernest Jones IV during San Francisco’s 32-29 Week 5 win at Lumen Field.
The sequence in Seattle started with Sam Darnold scrambling out of bounds and getting hit late by Greenlaw, who was flagged for a personal foul on the play. Things escalated fast from there.
Several Seahawks defenders came over near Seattle’s sideline, and Jones - who was not wearing a helmet - got into it with Greenlaw. Jones appeared to push at Greenlaw’s facemask, and Greenlaw answered by headbutting him in the face.
Jones was bleeding after the contact, and Greenlaw was thrown out of the game.
The league said the move violated Rule 12, Section 3, Article 1, which deals with conduct that goes against the generally understood principles of sportsmanship. After the game, 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan said he felt Seattle baited Greenlaw into the confrontation.
Greenlaw is appealing the suspension, NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport reported Monday, citing a source. If the appeal is heard, one of the NFL and NFLPA jointly appointed hearing officers - Derrick Brooks, Jordy Nelson, Ron Rivera or James Thrash - will decide it.
If the suspension is upheld, Greenlaw will sit out San Francisco’s Week 6 matchup against the Washington Commanders on Monday night, Oct. 19, and would be eligible to return to the active roster on Tuesday, Oct. 20.
This isn’t Greenlaw’s first discipline issue. It’s the second suspension of his career and the third ejection.
He was also suspended one game in 2025 while with the Denver Broncos after the NFL ruled he chased referee Brad Allen and verbally threatened him as Allen tried to leave the field following Denver’s 33-32 win over the New York Giants. That suspension was upheld on appeal and cost Greenlaw a game check of $192,778.
Last week, the NFL also fined Greenlaw $11,941 for unsportsmanlike conduct after he repeatedly yelled at the Broncos’ sideline and head coach Sean Payton during a San Francisco win.
The 49ers are expected to learn the result of Greenlaw’s appeal before they play the Commanders, but until then his status for Week 6 is up in the air.

Tom Bradys Seahawks Call Is Going To Divide Fans
Tom Bradys second straight season in the Fox booth has already produced the kind of clip that gets replayed long after the game ends, and his comments during a 49ers-Seahawks matchup fit that mold. When Sam Darnold took a hit from Dre Greenlaw, Brady suggested the Seahawks quarterback was acting, a remark that immediately put him at the center of the conversation in a game that was already chippy and tightly watched.
Greenlaw was later ejected after headbutting a helmetless player and also drew a flag for a late hit on Darnold, only adding fuel to a moment that already had plenty of edge. Bradys analysis of other plays from the game drew notice too, but it was the Darnold comment that stood out and figures to split Seahawks fans between those who want sharper broadcast critique and those who thought he crossed a line. Seahawks Suddenly Have A Riq Woolen Decision Worth Watching
Riq Woolens name has a way of circling back into the Seahawks conversation, and this time the fit feels a little more practical than nostalgic. Seattles cornerback group has struggled enough this season to keep the front office looking for answers, and Woolen, now in his first season with the Eagles on a one-year deal, is the sort of player who naturally lands on the radar when a team wants help on the back end.
Philadelphias willingness to listen only adds to the intrigue, even if any move would likely require draft capital to get done. Woolen has flashed enough to keep evaluators interested, but his season has also been uneven, which is why the Seahawks would have to weigh upside against price before making a move. For a secondary that needs help, the possibility is there, but so is the risk of overpaying for a familiar name. [Read more 🡒]
49ers Just Lost A Weapon Seahawks Fans Know Can Change Games
The 49ers left Sunday night with a win over the Seahawks, but they also came away with a costly injury to one of the most familiar difference-makers in the division. Deebo Samuel suffered a hamstring injury in the game and will miss at least a few weeks, a setback for San Francisco at a time when the receiver room is already thin.
Kyle Shanahan acknowledged the challenge of losing multiple pass-catchers at once, with several other receivers also sidelined. It is the kind of blow Seattle knows well from years of trying to account for Samuels versatility, and it changes the way the 49ers have to build their offense while he recovers. Backup linebacker Garret Wallow also hurt his hamstring and is expected to miss some time. [Read more 🡒]
