He also added 47 rushing yards on seven carries, a reminder that he kept competing even as the game kept tilting away from the Patriots.
The play that may end up carrying the biggest aftermath came in the first quarter. Maye was stepping out of bounds when Seahawks linebacker Derick Hall shoved him well after the whistle had effectively ended the run. Officials immediately called unnecessary roughness, and the penalty moved New England 15 yards.
Now the NFL is expected to review the hit and decide whether Hall will face further discipline.
Maye remained in the game after the collision and kept battling through the rest of the night, something fans have already pointed to as evidence of his growth as a leader in his second season.
The league’s rulebook treats that kind of contact seriously. Under Rule 12, Section 2, Article 8 of the 2026 NFL rulebook, hits like Hall’s are classified as unnecessary roughness. And according to the NFL’s 2026 fines and appeals schedule, a first-time late hit usually comes with an $11,941 fine.
Hall now waits to see whether that’s the number the league applies to this play.
The Patriots’ next chance to respond comes Sept. 20, when they host Aaron Rodgers and the Pittsburgh Steelers.
