Drake Maye Faces Early Patriots Test After Seahawks Thriller

New England Patriots quarterback Drake Maye talks resilience and readiness as the team navigates setbacks from crucial mistakes and the loss of star receiver A.J. Brown.

Drake Maye is trying to flush the mess from Seattle and move forward with the kind of mindset quarterbacks have to carry when the spotlight gets hot.

After throwing three costly fourth-quarter interceptions in New England’s 13-10 season-opening loss to the Seahawks, the Patriots quarterback said he would “be better” for his team. On WEEI, he dug deeper into that idea and made it clear the only path is forward.

“You’ve got teammates. That’s what you have teammates for, and coaches,” Maye said about moving on from the tough loss, per Conor Ryan of Boston.com.

“I think they’ve experienced it, and at this capacity, it’s just different when you’re playing this position at quarterback. Your mistakes and what you do with the football are at a more drastic level, because your decisions change the outcomes of games.

So just realizing that, and also realizing that you’ve got to go back out there and have the next-play mentality.”

It was a rough opener for Maye, who was sacked six times and turned the ball over three times - one fumble and two interceptions - in what the source described as a bad movie. Those issues have already put him under a brighter microscope with New England heading into Week 2 against the 1-0 Pittsburgh Steelers on Sunday.

The Patriots are also dealing with a major offensive hit. Maye’s top target, A.J.

Brown, went down with a high ankle sprain and no fracture in the third quarter against Seattle, and he is reportedly expected to miss about six weeks. Maye was asked how much that changes things for the offense.

“You’d like to say that it won’t,” Maye said. “But a player like A.J., any time you lose a big-time player like that, it adds a different element, guys needing to step up, and guys get more looks and more chances, and the chances and opportunities that you get in this league, you’ve [got to] make the most of them.

I think we had a lot of scenarios last year where guys stepped up and made plays. …Usually you kind of see this later on the season, but right off the bat, we’re getting a good chance to kind of see where we’re at and seeing guys step up.”

Maye closed by saying he has “got to be better, and I will be better going forward.”

As of Wednesday morning, DraftKings Sportsbook had the 0-1 Patriots as 4.5-point home favorites over the Steelers.

Mike Macdonald Opened Up About A Seahawks Struggle Fans Never Saw

Mike Macdonalds first season guiding the Seahawks came with more than the usual rookie-coach turbulence. Macdonald said those challenges reached beyond the sideline and into his own well-being, touching on depression and the mental strain that came with the job. Seattles improvement the following season only sharpened the spotlight on how much his self-awareness and recovery mattered, even if the full story of how he worked through that period still leaves one important piece to be told. Seahawks Face Two Key Week 2 Injury Questions Against Arizona

The Seahawks head into their Week 2 matchup with Arizona already dealing with a trimmed-down depth chart, with quarterback Sam Darnold and safety Ty Okada ruled out because of injuries. Those absences force Seattle to shuffle both a key spot on offense and an important piece of the secondary, while the team waits to see how the rest of the roster holds up through the final stages before kickoff.

Nick Emmanwori and right guard Anthony Bradford are both listed as questionable, leaving two more spots in flux as Seattle works through its game-day decisions. If either player can go, it could soften the blow of the early injury news, but the Seahawks are still in a spot where lineup changes may continue right up until they face the Cardinals. [Read more 🡒]
