D'Anthony Bell May Have Found An Unexpected Seahawks Roster Path

Deck: As the Seahawks finalize their roster, D'Anthony Bell's versatility might be his ticket onto the team, even if it's not at his primary position.

D’Anthony Bell is making his case in Seahawks camp, but the clearest path to sticking around may not come at safety.

With Seattle set to open preseason play against the Dallas Cowboys in just a few days and training camp wrapping up next week, every rep matters more now. The safety group already has its top names lined up with Julian Love, Ty Okada, and Nick Emmanwori, while Bud Clark, Rodney Thomas II, and Bell are battling for backup and rotational work.

Bell is in an interesting spot. He spent most of last season with the Seahawks, and while he has the inside track among the bubble candidates, he is still very much fighting for a roster spot. What’s helped him this summer is that he has looked better than not, and head coach Mike Macdonald has clearly noticed.

Part of Bell’s advantage right now is opportunity. With Emmanwori easing back from ankle surgery, Bell has gotten far more snaps than expected.

He has used those reps well, including work with the first-team defense, and he has also flashed with one of the camp’s biggest defensive plays so far: a pick-six on Monday. Bell jumped a throw and returned it 90 yards for the score.

That extra playing time has also let Seattle see more of Bell’s versatility. He’s shown he can slide into the slot/nickel role, which gives him another lane to stay on the roster even if he doesn’t win a pure safety job. That kind of flexibility matters in a crowded competition.

Macdonald pointed directly to that broader value when talking about Bell’s chances.

"It was great to see him make a play today," Macdonald said." He's doing a good job.

There's a lot of competition for the job that he is trying to earn himself, so it's a process. One day at a time, but D Bell is doing a good job.

It's going to come down to special teams; how we package our personnel groups, things like that. He made a great play today that was awesome."

That last part is the key. Bell may still contribute at safety, but Macdonald’s comments make it sound like special teams could be the role that gets him over the line. Bell’s hybrid ability gives Seattle options, and that may be what separates him from the rest of the pack.

For now, he remains a bubble player. But the projections still lean toward Bell making the final roster, and camp has given him a strong case to do it again in Seattle. Whether it’s in the secondary or on special teams, he’s making himself hard to ignore.

Seahawks Backfield Concerns Just Got Bigger Before The Cowboys Game

The Seahawks backfield picture got a little murkier heading into their preseason meeting with the Cowboys, even before the team has had a chance to settle into game week. Seattles top draft pick, Jadarian Price, was back on the field for a walkthrough after missing several days because of lower body soreness, which at least offered a small step in the right direction after the recent pause.

Emmanuel Wilsons day brought a new concern, though, after he suffered an upper leg injury during practice and was unable to take part in the walkthrough. With both players now navigating health issues at a position group that already needed stability, Seattles running back depth is suddenly a more pressing storyline as the Cowboys game approaches. Seahawks Enter Cowboys Game With Several Roster Spots Suddenly Under Pressure

The Seahawks are heading into their preseason opener against the Cowboys with training camp winding down and a handful of roster battles still very much alive. For players on the fringe, this is the stage where a few strong practices can turn into real momentum, and the first exhibition game is the first chance to make that case in front of the staff. Montorie Foster, Irv Charles, Emmanuel Henderson and a few others are among the names trying to turn opportunity into something more concrete before the roster starts getting trimmed down.

Seattles depth chart is still being shaped, which is why these reps matter so much for the players trying to hang on. Special teams work, clean assignments and a few timely plays in preseason action can go a long way at this point, especially with so many spots still unsettled. The Seahawks have several candidates under pressure, and the coming games should start sorting out who is truly pushing for one of those final 53-man openings. [Read more 🡒]

Mike Macdonald Sent A Clear Message To Derick Hall At Camp

Training camp is supposed to be where habits get sharpened, but it can also be where a coach reminds everyone exactly who sets the tone. During a Seahawks practice session featured on HBOs Hard Knocks, Mike Macdonald stepped in when edge rusher Derick Hall kept getting too close to the quarterback during drills, pulling him out of the rep and making it clear the practice belonged to the staff, not the players.

The exchange quickly turned tense, and because it played out on a national stage, it landed far beyond the practice field. For Seattle, it was a small camp moment with a big message: Macdonald is going to be direct about standards, especially when it comes to protecting his quarterbacks and controlling the details that matter most in August.
