The Commanders are casting a wide net in their search for a new defensive coordinator, and one of the latest names to emerge is Karl Scott, the Seahawks’ defensive backs coach and pass game coordinator. According to reports, Washington has interviewed Scott as part of a growing list of candidates aimed at reshaping the defense after a disappointing 5-12 season.
Scott, 40, brings a blend of NFL and college experience that makes him an intriguing option. He’s spent the last four seasons with Seattle, helping to develop a young secondary and playing a key role in the team’s pass defense schemes. Before that, he had a one-year stint with the Vikings in 2021 as their defensive backs coach - his first NFL job - where he quickly earned respect for his detailed approach and ability to connect with players.
But Scott’s coaching roots run deep in the college game. He served as the defensive coordinator at Southeastern Louisiana in 2014 and held various defensive coaching roles at Alabama, Texas Tech, and Louisiana Tech. That background has helped shape a coaching style that blends schematic versatility with strong player development - two things the Commanders could use right now.
Washington’s defensive coordinator position opened after the team parted ways with Joe Whitt Jr. following a season where the defense struggled to find consistency. Now, with a new coaching staff on the horizon and a roster that features both veteran talent and promising young pieces, the Commanders are evaluating a range of candidates to lead the unit into a new era.
Scott isn’t the only name in the mix. The Commanders have also interviewed Chiefs defensive line coach Joe Cullen, requested to speak with Vikings defensive coordinator Brian Flores, and have an interview scheduled with former Cardinals head coach Jonathan Gannon. Each candidate brings a different flavor of defensive philosophy and leadership style, but the common thread is clear: Washington is looking for a strong defensive mind who can help reestablish an identity on that side of the ball.
With interviews ongoing and more likely to come, the Commanders are clearly taking a thorough approach. Whether they lean toward a seasoned NFL coordinator like Flores or a rising talent like Scott, the decision will be a pivotal one for a team hoping to turn things around quickly.
