Seattle Seahawks defensive back A.J. Finley turned a painful memory into a moment worth celebrating at Fan Fest.
A little more than a year after he was carted off at Lumen Field with a torn ACL, Finley was back in the same setting and came up with the kind of play that can stick in a coach’s mind. He picked off quarterback Sam Darnold, and the defense erupted with the fans as Finley delivered a reminder that he’s not just back on the field - he’s making plays again.
“It really didn't hit me until I got to the sideline and all the boys were congratulating me," Finley told reporters. "It's definitely a full-circle moment. I'm just sticking the process, taking it day-to-day, and honestly, it's been a hell of a ride."
The interception carried extra weight because of what Finley has been through. He spent the entire 2025 season on injured reserve while working his way back from the ACL injury. Before that, he had four games on the roster in 2024 after the Seahawks claimed him off waivers following his release by the Los Angeles Chargers.
Now the challenge shifts from rehab to roster math. Finley is trying to get himself in shape and also earn a spot on the 53-man roster, which is no small task in a crowded secondary. His play at Fan Fest showed health, confidence and a knack for showing up when the ball is in the air.
“It was incredible," Macdonald told reporters. "I'm incredibly happy for him.
He's worked incredibly hard, he's been a great teammate the whole process. At this time last year, he was really battling for a great role, and he's put himself right back in the thick of things.
He broke the team down at the end, which I thought was really cool.
"It was one of those things like, how do you handle it as a coach? Do you bring it up, do you not?
We were thinking about it-I know AD (defensive coordinator Aden Durde) talked to him this morning-we were all kind of thinking about him going into this. That was really cool."
Finley’s path to the roster still runs through special teams. So far in his career, he has played 75 defensive snaps and 432 special team snaps, and that background matters as the Seahawks sort through the back end of the roster. At the same time, the team values playmakers, and the interception gave Finley a strong argument in his favor.
Seattle will release an unofficial depth chart later this week before its first preseason game against the Dallas Cowboys, but Finley still has work to do if he wants to stick. The Seahawks are expected to keep four or five safeties, leaving him to compete for one of those final spots against Rodney Thomas II, Brandon Johnson and Maxen Hook.
