Seattle Mariners Face Crucial Roster Decisions Ahead of Opening Day

As the Seattle Mariners approach Opening Day, uncertainties in key positions could shape the final roster decisions, with pivotal roles still in flux.

As the Seattle Mariners wrap up their Cactus League schedule, there's a lot on the line with Opening Day just around the corner. Let's dive into the key questions the Mariners need to tackle before they face the Cleveland Guardians on Thursday night.

1) J.P. Crawford's Readiness for Opening Day

J.P. Crawford has been a cornerstone for the Mariners since arriving from the Phillies in 2019.

However, shoulder discomfort has limited him to just seven games this spring, with only three appearances at shortstop. At 31, Crawford remains a pivotal figure, having won a Gold Glove in 2020 and providing leadership in the clubhouse.

Last season, he hit .265 with 12 homers and 58 RBIs, boasting a .352 on-base percentage. The Mariners might play it safe and start him on the injured list to ensure full recovery, but if he does miss the opener, it shouldn't be for long.

2) Deciding on the Backup Infielder

Crawford's health will significantly impact this decision. If he's ready, Leo Rivas seems set for the backup infielder role.

Rivas is a switch-hitter known for his defensive skills at second base and shortstop, and he brings speed to the table. If Crawford isn't ready, Rivas might start at shortstop, opening up the depth role to Ryan Bliss or Miles Mastrobuoni.

Bliss has some questions about his versatility, while Mastrobuoni, dealing with a calf issue, could be a crucial right-handed bench option-if he's ready.

3) The Backup Catcher Dilemma

Veteran Andrew Knizner was signed for $1 million, but his spring performance has been lackluster, with a .172 average. Mitch Garver, returning on a minor league deal, hasn't fared much better, hitting .182.

If Garver makes the roster, the Mariners will have invested $3.25 million in the backup catcher spot. The decision hinges on whether Garver's familiarity with the team outweighs his current stats.

4) The Fifth Starter Slot

With Bryce Miller sidelined due to an oblique injury, the fifth starter role is a contest between Emerson Hancock and Cooper Criswell. This decision could have a ripple effect on the bullpen composition.

5) Finalizing the Bullpen

The bullpen battle is closely tied to the fifth starter decision. Andres Munoz, Matt Brash, Gabe Speier, Jose Ferrer, Eduard Bazardo, and Carlos Vargas are all likely to stay, leaving two spots open.

Casey Legumina, despite a 6.23 ERA, might secure a spot due to being out of options. If Hancock wins the starter role, Criswell could claim the last bullpen spot, or vice versa.

Cole Wilcox is also in the mix, having impressed with 11 strikeouts in 8.1 innings.
