The Padres have officially informed Ty France that he's made the Opening Day roster, a move that brings his journey full circle. Drafted by San Diego back in 2015, France first hit the majors with the Padres in 2019. Now, at 31, he returns as the reigning AL Gold Glove winner at first base, after a solid stint with the Mariners.
France's recent offensive numbers have seen a dip, posting a .245/.312/.363 slash line over the last two seasons across stints with the Mariners, Twins, and Blue Jays. However, his impressive performance in spring training camp has earned him a spot on the Padres' 26-man roster.
This decision was likely influenced by Sung-Mun Song's injury. Song, dealing with oblique tightness, is set to start the season on the 10-day injured list.
France joins a crowded first base scene, with Gavin Sheets expected to start but likely sitting against left-handed pitchers. This opens up opportunities for France, alongside Miguel Andujar and Nick Castellanos, to see some action. The designated hitter role in San Diego also offers additional chances for these players to get at-bats.
Under his minor league contract, France stands to earn $1.35 million for making the roster. As an Article XX(B) free agent, he had the option to opt out if not added to the 40-man roster, but it seems the Padres made their move before any decision was necessary. With this new chapter, France is set to make his mark once again in San Diego.
