Harry Ford, once a promising catching prospect for the Seattle Mariners, has been optioned to Triple-A Rochester by the Washington Nationals. At 23, Ford was a standout in the Mariners' farm system and consistently ranked among baseball's top 100 prospects after being picked 12th overall in the 2021 MLB Draft. However, his journey to the majors hit a roadblock with Cal Raleigh, the American League MVP runner-up, firmly holding the catching reins in Seattle.
Ford's impressive stint in Triple-A Tacoma, where he boasted a .408 on-base percentage, an .868 OPS, and 16 homers across 97 games, earned him a brief call-up last season. During his short stint with the Mariners, he made a memorable impact with a walk-off sac fly against the Los Angeles Angels and added a hit in his sole playoff appearance.
With limited opportunities in Seattle, Ford was traded to the Nationals alongside minor league pitcher Isaac Lyon in exchange for lefty reliever Jose A. Ferrer, who is set to take on a crucial bullpen role for the Mariners.
This spring, Ford showed flashes of his potential, going 3 for 14 with a double and two RBIs in seven games for Washington. He also contributed to Great Britain's efforts in the World Baseball Classic, hitting a home run and driving in two runs over four games.
Despite starting the season in Triple-A, Ford remains a key part of the Nationals' future plans. The team will begin the season with Keibert Ruiz and Drew Millas as their primary catchers.
Ruiz, 27, returns as the starter after being acquired in the blockbuster 2021 trade involving Max Scherzer and Trea Turner. He’s locked in with the Nationals through 2030, with options extending to 2032, though his last season was cut short by concussion issues.
Nationals' manager Blake Butera emphasized Ford's importance to the organization, assuring that his assignment to Triple-A is not a reflection of his performance or potential. "He’s going to be a huge part of our future," Butera stated, underscoring the club's belief in Ford's abilities and future contributions.
