Mariners Suddenly Have A New Decision To Watch Beyond The Roster

Mariners fans have plenty to digest as rising prospects and managerial shake-ups highlight the landscape of upcoming seasons.

The Dodgers are one step from getting swept in the NLCS after the Brewers backed a 6-2 win with a power surge that included three home runs.

In Mariners news, Fangraphs’ David Laurila spoke with Boston Smith, the prospect Seattle picked up in the Luis Castillo trade. Smith is now getting his work in with the organization in the Arizona Fall League.

Kate Preusser also checked in with Jarvis Gomez after his breakout showing in the Dominican Summer League, giving the prospect spotlight to another name in the Mariners system.

Over at The Feed, Tommy Stokke opened up discussion on the Mariners’ biggest prospect disappointments.

Around the league, MLB released its 2026 Gold Glove finalists, and Cole Young was the only Mariner to make the cut.

There was also an official note from Houston: Joe Espada will not be back as Astros manager in 2027, which leaves the Mariners with a possible opening if they decide to go that direction.

Elsewhere, Sam Blum of The Athletic reported on the Rays’ struggle to fill seats at the Trop despite their big season. Will Sammon at The Athletic wrote that the Mets are growing their scouting department while many other clubs are cutting back.

The White Sox are focusing on upgrading their starting rotation this offseason, and Michael Baumann at Fangraphs broke down why the Dodgers removed Blake Snell in the middle of a strong outing against Milwaukee.

Danny Funt also spoke with former ESPN producer Nicole Noren, who said she is speaking out about the sports gambling issue that led to her departure.

Mariners Just Lost One Safe Option In A Crucial Manager Search

The Mariners managerial search just got a little narrower. Philadelphia settled its own dugout situation by giving Don Mattingly a two-year contract after Alex Cora passed on the job again, removing one of the more accomplished veteran options from the board at a time when Seattle is trying to steady itself after a disappointing season.

For the Mariners, the search still appears to be in the early sorting phase, with Joe Espada among the names expected to draw consideration. Seattle would prefer some managerial experience, but it is not treating that as a requirement, which keeps the pool open even as familiar, established options start to disappear. [Read more 🡒]

Mariners Cannot Afford To Miss On This Manager Hire

The Mariners are casting an unusually wide net in their search for a new manager, with an initial list reportedly reaching 40 candidates as they sort through a field that includes Joe Espada, Rocco Baldelli, Brandon Hyde and David Ross. For a club that has spent years trying to turn promise into sustained contention, this is one of the more important hires on the front-office calendar, and the range of names suggests Seattle is not rushing the process.

Hyde stands out because of the profile he built in Baltimore and during his time as a senior advisor with the Tampa Bay Rays, where he developed a reputation for handling young players and working comfortably with analytics. Those traits matter in Seattle, where the next manager will need to fit a roster that still has room to grow and a decision-making structure that places a premium on information. The Mariners can afford to be thorough here, but they cannot afford to get it wrong. [Read more 🡒]

Cole Young Just Gave Mariners Fans A New Reason To Believe

Cole Youngs rookie season already gave the Mariners plenty to feel good about, and now the second baseman has added another layer to that conversation. Young was named a finalist for the American League Gold Glove Award, a nod that reflects how quickly he established himself as a reliable presence in the field while appearing in 161 games this season.

Young is among three finalists at second base, alongside Chase Meidroth and Michael Massey, and the honor puts him in position for another notable milestone before the offseason fully settles in. The winners will be announced on Nov. 1, leaving Mariners fans with one more reason to keep Youngs name front and center as the clubs future starts to come into focus. [Read more 🡒]
