Mariners Shine in Cactus League Opener
The Mariners kicked off their Cactus League campaign with a solid 7-4 victory over the Padres, setting a new record with a crowd of 9,956 fans-the largest ever for a spring home opener in Mariners history. This turnout eclipsed the previous record of 9,748 set back in 2004 against Arizona.
The game featured some standout performances, particularly from Connor Joe, whose clutch 2-run single in the 7th inning broke a 3-3 tie, bringing Jonny Farmelo and Will Wilson home to secure a 5-3 lead for Seattle. Joe's timely hit was a pivotal moment, showcasing his knack for delivering under pressure.
Michael Arroyo also made a significant impact early on, launching a 2-run homer in the 2nd inning that sailed over the right-center field wall, giving the Mariners an initial 2-0 advantage. Arroyo's perfect day at the plate, going 2-for-2 with a home run and a double, highlighted his potential as a key contributor this season.
Luke Raley, starting in the leadoff spot, matched Arroyo's performance by going 2-for-2 before Jonny Farmelo took over as a pinch-runner. Farmelo wasted no time making his presence felt, swiping second base and scoring on Josh Naylor's clutch two-out RBI single.
Off the bench, Lazaro Montes added to the Mariners' offensive efforts with a single off Padres pitcher Mason Miller, demonstrating the depth and versatility of Seattle's lineup.
Defensively, the Mariners were equally impressive. Right fielder Dominic Canzone made a spectacular diving catch in the 1st inning, preventing extra bases for Jake Cronenworth and stranding two Padres runners. Not to be outdone, second baseman Miles Mastrobuoni showcased his glove work with a diving stop to retire Clay Dungan in the 6th inning.
Overall, the Mariners' performance in this opener was a promising glimpse of what could be a very exciting season. With both offensive firepower and defensive prowess on display, Seattle fans have plenty of reasons to be optimistic.
