The Seattle Mariners have a knack for transforming overlooked bullpen arms into standout relievers. It’s not magic, but their track record suggests they’ve got a formula that works.
So, when they add a new name to their roster, even from independent leagues, it’s worth paying attention. Enter Brendan White, a right-hander signed recently by the Mariners.
White's journey is intriguing. Drafted by the Detroit Tigers in the 26th round back in 2019, he made it to the majors in 2023.
His stint wasn’t exactly stellar, posting a 5.09 ERA across 33 appearances. Elbow issues in 2024 and a rough 2025 season with a 7.24 ERA in Triple-A Toledo didn’t help his cause.
Even with the Lancaster Stormers in the Atlantic League, his numbers were less than ideal.
Yet, there’s something about White that catches the eye. His delivery is unique, a three-quarters motion that seems to conceal the ball effectively from hitters.
In 2023, despite his struggles, his four-seam fastball was a bright spot. Averaging 94.4 mph, it held hitters to a .162 average with a 35.1% whiff rate, comparable to some of the game’s elite.
The missing piece for White has been a reliable secondary pitch. Recent footage from Velo University shows him mixing in promising sliders and sweepers, hinting at potential growth in his arsenal.
The Mariners have a penchant for sliders, with pitchers like Andrés Muñoz and Matt Brash setting the standard. If White can refine his slider, he might just carve out a role in Seattle’s bullpen. At best, he could become a middle-relief option for the Mariners, filling gaps in a bullpen that often sees rotation.
Even if White spends his time with Triple-A Tacoma, his presence is valuable. The Rainiers have a long season ahead, and depth is crucial in the minors. Whether he’s refining his skills or stepping up to the majors, White’s journey with the Mariners is one to watch.
