Mariners Reveal Special Opening Day First Pitch Tribute

Seattle Mariners celebrate their 50th season by connecting past and present, honoring legendary figures who shaped the franchise's history.

As the Seattle Mariners embarked on their 50th season, they paid tribute to their storied past in a memorable way. Ruppert Jones, the franchise's first-ever draft pick back in 1976, had the honor of throwing out the ceremonial first pitch at T-Mobile Park. This special moment unfolded before the Mariners faced off against the Cleveland Guardians on a Thursday night, setting the stage for a season steeped in history.

On the receiving end of Jones' pitch was former Mariners first baseman David Segui, adding another layer of nostalgia to the event. This connection to the Mariners' history runs deep, as Segui's father, Diego Segui, was a pivotal figure in Seattle's baseball lore.

Diego not only started the first game in Mariners history in 1977 but also played for the Seattle Pilots in 1969, making him the only player to have donned both uniforms. Sadly, Diego passed away last June at the age of 87, but his legacy continues to resonate.

Ruppert Jones made his mark with the Mariners during his three seasons from 1977 to 1979. In 1977, he became the first Mariner to earn an All-Star nod, showcasing his talent with a .263 average, a .778 OPS, and a career-high 24 home runs. His contributions helped lay the foundation for the franchise's future.

Diego Segui, known for his time with the Pilots, had an impressive season in 1969, boasting a 12-6 record with a 3.35 ERA over 142 1/3 innings. His tenure with the Mariners in 1977, though less successful, marked the end of a commendable 15-year career.

David Segui, following in his father's footsteps, played for the Mariners in 1998 and part of 1999. His standout season came in 1998 when he achieved a career-high 3.2 bWAR, hitting .305 with an .886 OPS, 19 homers, and 36 doubles.

As the Mariners celebrate their 50th season, these connections to their past not only honor the players who helped shape the franchise but also inspire the current team to build on that legacy.
