The Mariners didn’t just beat the A’s on Saturday night - they blew the doors off the game and set a franchise record in the process, rolling to a 19-1 win.
Dominic Canzone got the barrage going right away with a two-run homer in the first inning, and Randy Arozarena kept the pressure on with a three-run shot in the third. From there, Seattle kept stacking quality at-bats and cashing in on every opening the A’s handed over.
The free passes piled up for Oakland, which issued six walks and hit one batter, and the Mariners made that sloppy stretch hurt. The A’s finally scratched across their lone run in the fourth after a bad throw by Woo on a dribbler back to the mound helped put runners on first and third, then Shea Langeliers’ grounder turned into a fielder’s choice that brought the run home.
Seattle answered immediately. Michael Arroyo opened the next inning with the first hit of his career, a double, and Weston Wilson followed with a single that scored him. Wilson then moved up on a fly ball from Crawford, and Arozarena added another RBI when his single bounced off the glove of former Mariner Donovan Walton.
The game kept tilting harder and harder toward Seattle in the fifth. Josh Naylor singled, and Cole “Cole Young” Young jumped on the next pitch for his 17th homer of the year.
Arroyo added another milestone in the seventh, crushing an inside fastball for his first career home run with two outs. Then Wilson kept rolling with his third hit of the night, a double that set up J.P. Crawford’s home run and pushed the Mariners into double digits.
The eighth inning turned into more of the same. An A’s error let Victor Robles, batting for Canzone, reach base, and Julio followed with his third hit of the night.
Naylor then doubled down the right-field line to score Robles. Cole Young came through again with an infield single that drove in another run, giving him his second hit and third RBI of the game.
Arroyo wasn’t done either. He picked up his third hit and second RBI, bringing home Brock Rodden, who was pinch-running for Naylor.
Wilson then slapped his fourth hit of the game into play to load the bases. Lazaro Montes, pinch-hitting for Arozarena, drew a four-pitch walk to force in another run.
By the ninth, the Mariners were still piling on. Position player Carlos Cortes, who had entered to get the final out in the eighth, stayed on and walked the bases loaded in the top of the ninth. Cole Young then doubled in Julio and Cal, and Arroyo capped the night with a sacrifice fly to right that scored Rodden.
The final line was absurd enough on its own, but the headline number was even bigger: the Mariners set a team record for the largest margin of victory in team history.
Michael Arroyo and Cole Young were the night’s biggest offensive stories. Both homered, and together they drove in eight of Seattle’s 19 runs. Young kept showing why he’s been so impressive in his first full major league season, while Arroyo picked up his first hit, first extra-base hit and first home run in his first road game of his career.
Bryan Woo was just as important on the other side of the ball. He went six innings, allowed three hits, two walks and one unearned run, and struck out five.
That one run stayed unearned, which preserved a 17-inning streak Woo has against the A’s over his last few starts. He’s also settled in on the road, posting a 1.59 ERA over 17 innings since the start of August.
Seattle’s win came with nearly everyone chipping in, and it leaves the club still chasing a playoff spot with only a handful of games left. The Mariners’ remaining slate includes the Angels, the Rockies, the Astros and then the Angels again to finish the season.
