Mariners Linked to Mitch Garver in Intriguing Roster Move

Mitch Garver returns to the Mariners on a minor league deal, bringing his experience and past playoff presence back to Seattle's catching roster.

The Seattle Mariners are bringing back a familiar face to bolster their catching depth. Veteran catcher Mitch Garver has reportedly inked a minor league deal with the team, according to MLB insider Jeff Passan.

Garver, now 35, previously suited up for the Mariners during the 2024 and 2025 seasons after signing a two-year, $24 million contract. Initially brought on as the primary designated hitter, Garver faced challenges at the plate in 2024, eventually transitioning to become Seattle’s main backup catcher.

Last season, Garver posted a .209 batting average with nine home runs and a .639 OPS over 87 games. While those numbers might not jump off the page, he proved to be a reliable option against left-handed pitchers, hitting .233 with a .718 OPS. On the road, he showed even more promise, batting .245 with a .730 OPS.

Garver also contributed in the postseason, appearing in six games for the Mariners in 2025, where he managed a 2-for-7 performance, including a triple.

As spring training kicks off, Garver will be vying for a spot behind the plate alongside Andrew Knizner and Jhonny Pereda, who are both on the 40-man roster. The Mariners are also evaluating six non-roster invitees at the catcher position, including MLB-experienced players Brian O’Keefe and Jakson Reetz.

Garver's career highlights include a World Series title with the Texas Rangers in 2023 and a standout 2019 season with the Minnesota Twins, where he hit a career-high 31 home runs. His return to Seattle adds depth and experience to a team looking to make a strong push this season.
