Logan Allen's final spring training outing for the Cleveland Guardians was anything but smooth sailing. Facing the Mariners, Allen was tagged for 12 runs on 14 hits with two walks over just 2.1 innings.
Despite starting each of the first four innings, he couldn't finish any of them. In total, his Cactus League performance saw him allow 20 runs on 25 hits and eight walks in 10 innings.
To put it in perspective, his game score of -19, while rough, isn't the worst in MLB history. That dubious honor belongs to Allen Travers, who recorded a -70 game score back in 1912. However, Allen's outing would still be the toughest of the 21st century, surpassing Ben Lively's -16 in 2023.
Despite these struggles, Allen is still expected to be part of the Guardians' rotation. In 2025, he posted a respectable 4.25 ERA and a 1.398 WHiP over 156.2 innings, striking out 122 batters. These numbers are solid for a fifth starter, but if his spring issues carry over, his spot might be in jeopardy.
Cleveland has options waiting in the wings. Pitching prospect Khal Stephen is on the verge of making his major league debut, and Kolby Allard, a non-roster invitee, could be stretched out from his long relief role if needed.
While Allen's spring ended on a sour note, the good news is these games don't impact the standings. The Guardians will be hoping he can shake off the rust as they head into the regular season.
