George Kirby is set to take the mound for the Seattle Mariners against the Reds in Peoria, Arizona, and he's bringing a little tech to the game. For the second time this spring, Kirby will be using a PitchCom device, a tool he believes helps him stay focused and confident in his pitch selection, minimizing potential miscommunications with his catcher.
Despite Kirby's use of the device, Mariners manager Dan Wilson doesn't expect it to play a major role in today's game with Mitch Garver catching. "Kirby and Garver have a solid rapport," Wilson noted.
"Even though Kirby had the device last time, he didn't rely on it much. Their chemistry is strong, so I doubt it'll see much action today."
Garver is in a competitive battle for a roster spot, and syncing well with Kirby could be a big plus for him. Wilson, who knows a thing or two about pitcher-catcher dynamics, sees the value in their partnership.
Garver has been behind the plate for 17 of Kirby's 56 starts over the past two seasons. Wilson recalled a standout performance against the Angels where Kirby and Garver were perfectly in sync, which boosted their confidence in each other.
Wilson praised Garver's contributions both on and off the field. "Garver brings a wealth of experience and takes our data seriously.
He's a tremendous asset, much like Cal Raleigh, one of the league's top catchers. Having both of them is a huge advantage for us."
Garver, who joined camp on a minor league deal, stands to earn $2.25 million if he makes the 26-man roster. As an Article XX(B) free agent, he has the option to opt out of his contract on March 21 if he's not added to the roster.
Today's lineup features:

Injury-wise, J.P. Crawford, dealing with shoulder fatigue, is set to return Tuesday.
Ryan Bliss is also expected back after a minor issue. Outfielder Brennen Davis was pulled from Saturday’s game for precautionary reasons due to a hamstring concern, but it’s not expected to be serious.
With Josh Naylor still at the World Baseball Classic, the Mariners are short at first base. Carson Taylor, acquired from the Phillies in the minor league Rule 5 draft, will step in today.
