Fred Warner’s potential return has become one of the most intriguing storylines heading into the San Francisco 49ers’ Divisional Round clash with the Seattle Seahawks. And for good reason. We're talking about one of the premier linebackers in the game-arguably the best-on the verge of coming back from what was thought to be a season-ending ankle injury.
Warner went down in Week 6 with a broken ankle, an injury that typically sidelines players for months, sometimes longer. At the time, the outlook was grim-not just for the rest of the 2025 season, but for Warner’s offseason as well.
Fast forward to now, and not only is Warner back on the practice field, he’s officially within his 21-day return window. That alone is remarkable.
But whether he suits up this Saturday is still up in the air.
Warner himself addressed the situation this week on The Ryen Russillo Show, saying, “I’m ready whenever they’re ready. There’s some Ts that’ve got to be crossed, Is that have to be dotted… If it were just up to me, I’d be out there.
But unfortunately, it’s not that way.” That’s a competitor talking-a guy who wants to be in the trenches with his teammates in the biggest moments.
But the 49ers have to think bigger than just this weekend.
Here’s where things get complicated. Warner is a game-changer.
His presence in the middle of the field transforms the 49ers’ defense from really good to elite. His instincts, sideline-to-sideline speed, and leadership are irreplaceable.
But rushing him back before he’s truly ready? That’s a gamble with long-term consequences.
The team has to weigh the short-term gain of having Warner on the field against the risk of aggravating the injury and jeopardizing not just the rest of this postseason, but potentially part of 2026 as well.
Right now, Warner is listed as limited in practice. That could change as the week progresses-he might even go full participant before Saturday-but that doesn’t necessarily mean he’ll be cleared to play.
The 49ers are being cautious, and rightfully so. They know what Warner means to their defense, and they also know that if they can get past Seattle without him, they might have him at full strength for the NFC Championship.
That’s the long game San Francisco is playing here. Yes, having Warner back against the Seahawks would be a huge boost.
