When you're facing the Tampa Bay Lightning, every mistake can cost you dearly. They're a powerhouse, ranking in the top four for both goals scored and goals prevented. The Seattle Kraken learned this the hard way on Tuesday at Climate Pledge Arena, where a series of errors opened the door for a dominant Tampa performance.
Nikita Kucherov was the star of the show, netting a hat trick that included an empty-netter and adding two assists in the third period, leading Tampa to a 6-2 victory. Brandon Hagel also shone, contributing a goal and three assists.
Seattle showed some fight, clawing back with second-period goals from Bobby McMann and Jared McCann. McMann, fresh from Toronto, has been on fire with four goals and six points in just three games. Despite Phillip Grubauer's 18 saves, the Kraken couldn't hold back Tampa's relentless attack.
Even with the loss, Seattle clings to the second Wild Card spot in the Western Conference, thanks to San Jose's defeat by Edmonton.
1st Period Highlights
Jared McCann, usually so reliable, made an uncharacteristic error early on. Trying to evade Tampa's pressure, he inadvertently set up Gage Goncalves to open the scoring for the Lightning at 5:45.
Oliver Bjorkstrand and Yanni Gourde, making their Seattle return after being traded to Tampa, received warm welcomes. Bjorkstrand got a tribute video, while Gourde got a hug from Shane Wright-though it cost Wright a penalty for holding.
Seattle's penalty kill was tested early, with Ryker Evans joining Wright in the box. Despite their efforts, Kucherov capitalized on a Seattle turnover, combining with Hagel for a slick goal, putting Tampa up 2-0.
2nd Period Action
The second period started with a bang as Kucherov scored again, thanks to pinpoint passing from Hagel and Anthony Cirelli. But Seattle's Bobby McMann wasn't about to let Tampa run away with it. Just 10 seconds later, he found the net, marking his 23rd goal of the season and leading the team.
Seattle's comeback continued as McCann took advantage of a lapse in Tampa's defense, scoring to bring the Kraken within one. Gourde nearly added to the drama with a shorthanded breakaway, but the puck slipped away at the crucial moment.
3rd Period Drama
Tensions flared as Yanni Gourde and Ben Meyers dropped the gloves, with Gourde coming out on top. But it was Tampa's Anthony Cirelli who dealt the decisive blow, scoring off a rebound to extend the lead. Kucherov's assist on the play was his 73rd of the season, capping off a stellar night.
Looking Ahead
Seattle now hits the road for six games, starting with the Nashville Predators on Thursday. They'll need to tighten up their game to maintain their playoff position.
